I Disagree in this situation, but not all. if it is YOUR night at a club, as in I'm spinning all night and its a special event or something and my logo is on the poster and my name is up there, then yeah its my job to bring some people, but at what OP described, just an opener, it isn't his responsibility, especially with the amount of people hes being asked to bring. I don't know about any of you guys, but 25 people seems like a pretty big amount. i don't even have 25 friends, let alone friends that would come out to a club.

I think you were professional about it and did the right thing, OP.

Now the idea that you have to get X amount of people into the club before you get paid, that's slightly different, but still this guy is asking for you to bring along 25 heads into the building, surely that's not beyond your capabilities?

If the guy was saying you need 100 people in the door before you get paid, then I would say 'suck it' indeed. However, I've been hanging out with DJs and promoters for the past ten years and in all my experience the DJs always promote their own nights/the nights they play at, at least to a certain extent. Even if you're not in control of the artistic side of things, logos etc. then you still promote the club owner/promoter's flyers/posters/ go along to events and network the night etc.

It just goes with the territory. The other angle of this is, if you don't do it, someone else sure as hell will. Whether you like it or not, this is the situation. DJs generally also function as promoters, its a blurred line and one you have to accept and work with if you want to get gigs.

Again I say, if your pay is contingent on how many people you bring along, then that's slightly different, but as far as general promotion goes, its something you need to be doing to get the work in the first place.
Then you are the worlds biggest sucker to promote yourself and then let the "promoter" skim money off the top. If you promote something, EVERY SINGLE PENNY goes through your hand first. If you are the DJ, and there is a "promoter" then the most thats expected of you is to post a little blurb on your facebook.

They arent promoters if they require you to promote!!! What are they getting paid to do if you are doing their work?

Most "promoters" are drug dealers who are hood rich and want to "make more money" "promoting" and ultimately lose a shit load of money and do it exactly twice. There is ONE promoter in my town that does good and he has his own radio show and his own nights at clubs and is basically very professional about things and it shows. The other 200 have failed miserably because they want everyone else to do their job.

Dont promote yourself if someone else is making money off of promoting the night.

What're you talking about? Just because someone else is doing a job doesn't mean you can't help with that job. If doing that job helps bring in money to the club you're a part of, you should really do that job. If you're just going to be a shitbag who shows up an hour before his set, collects his cash, and leaves after, you're not coming back.

If you don't care about the club, the club doesn't care about you. If you insist on putting a wall between you and the club staff, they'll find someone else who actually wants the night to succeed.

So showing up an hour before a set, playing, and leaving an hour afterward is being a s#*tbag? Wow.
I'm pretty sure you just described the primary responsibilities of a DJ. Show up, play an awesome set, get paid, go home. That's what a Dj is supposed to do. Otherwise, you're a promoter who's good on the decks. Hell, why even have a promoter if it's the DJ's job to promote too? What good is a promoter that's asking other people to do his job for him?

If I have gig, I'll tell everybody about it regardless. However, if my pay is dependent on how many people bring in for an opening set that's BS

Promoting as a dj has been around a long time, probably since 1994. But bringing in a guaranteed amount of people is bogus. Also a $100?
Forget it. Remember!!!! If the pay for any DJ work is less than it will cost you to buy an ADJ Revo 4, let someone else take the gig. and NOT a Reconditioned one either
