Just been hit with a soundcloud copyright warning :(

Has anyone else had this at all?

I uploaded a new mix last night as usual with some old and some new UK garage stuff. In the comments I listed the names of some of the artists but didn't do a full tracklist as I didn't have time. Could this be the reason I got the copyright warning? It's strange as I've never had this before... I hope that's not the future of soundcloud.

Here's the full message I got

    "Copyright Notification: “Aphro Garage Promo”
We've received a report that your sounds "Aphro Garage Promo", the images or other material associated with theses sounds infringe someone else’s copyright. We have removed this content from SoundCloud for the time being.

What can I do about it?
If your content contains copyright material in part only, you may edit your content to remove the copyright work and re-submit it to SoundCloud.

If you believe that copyright material has been mistakenly identified in your content, or if you have used copyright material but have all necessary rights, licenses and permissions from the rights holder to upload and share this material on SoundCloud, you can dispute the claim by clicking on the link below."

Don't think too much of it, as far as I know Soundcloud is getting more and more American (read: obsessed) with copyrights.

It has nothing to do with you including tracklists or not. Soundfilter uses an audio filter to check against releases from record companies that have requested takedowns of any of their material.

It happened to my mix #5 last month because I included a Nas track (in a house/nu disco set!!). Usually I use strictly underground material and nothing ever happens - infact I usually try to alert the artists that I'm using their work in my set. Anyway, that got taken down. Luckily (or not) it was the first track in the mix. So I removed that and posted the rest of the mix. Posted the full mixset on mixcloud instead.

But yes, the copyright filter is very very annoying, and it is ridiculous really. We're giving artists exposure, that might very well lead to a purchase. Besides we're only using segments of tracks. If people want to pirate stuff, they sure as hell are not gonna cut out a segment of a DJ mix session (unless they're really desperate and can't get the track anywhere else).

    Rant over.

Annoying thing is I didn't get a specific track warning so it could literally be any of the 20 tracks in there..

I've sent a request for a refund as I upgraded to the second level of the premium accounts to get more stuff on there but it's totally pointless now.

You don't own the mechanical rights, simple as that. If an artist or the related label feel like selling their copyrighted product, they have the legal right to request companies such as soundcloud to have any infringing material removed. SoundCloud wouldn't have much of a future if they didn't comply instead of risking costly lawsuits and I am sure you can understand that.

is a 1000x better arguments to refrain from making such a request.

I would jump a hole in the air if I would hear DJs playing my tracks all over the net.

I can totally relate to that, unfortunately we live in a world where money prevails over happy thoughts. To expand a little on the subject, I know for a fact(and also actually did some studies on the subject) that the people who buy the most records are those who have the opportunity to pre-listen before purchase. So I do think the words free exposure are actually valid in some ways, as in free publicity.

Now I reckon that if you don't add a tracklist "because you didn't have time" is a poor excuse, you want to share the stuff then do it properly. It is disrespectful for the artist who spent long hours making that track to have all credit removed. That, is an infringement beyond the money. You wouldn't jump in the air if the guy was playing your track alongside some "You're in the mix with DJ Noobium" sample, horn sound and cue the next track without even mentioning you.

I had my stuff played over the radio a few times, every time the DJ explained what it is, who made it with a few nice things to say about it, then pressed play. I see a lot of people who barely type a line of text that often sums up as " check out my new hot electrostepbro mix yo".

Well, you don't HAVE to write a tracklist for mixcloud, but I love the fact that most people do so. It is very annoying finding cool tunes in a DJ mix set and then not knowing what it is. I'm the impatient type. If I hear a great track, I want it NOW.
