I mean the miracle in mixing is same as the miracle in mastering--you outsource it and then pay for that. Top mixing engineers will cut deals for indie and unsigned acts--only $3000 per song
You can probably get an unknown but talented mixer to do your whole EP for $500. Better yet, find a local mixing engineer with solid skills and form a duo.
Or as you said, learn mixing yourself. It's actually *really* fun.
Just another vote for Eric Dahl. Guy is awesome. Used him for my first album, and possibly unbeknownst to him he's going to do my two upcoming EP's (here's your headsup Eric)
