Who here is an Avicii fan? Flo Rida?
Silhouettes is an interesting track to listen to.

But I understand where you're coming from now, and I agree with what you're saying. I enjoy both versions and i give more credit to cassius than avicii on the entirety of the song. I guess i just have roped avicii and his songs with "listen to this without much expectation." avicii's tracks are fun to listen to, but there isn't much merit to it, and i do give credit where credit is due.

Derek Vincent Smith, better known as Pretty Lights, sampled etta james song in his track Finally Moving. What was done with flo ridas track was a rip off of the instrumental to Finally Moving, not a re sample of etta james original. Derek made one public statement regarding the flo rida track and he indicated he did not work on the track and he knew it was his song because of a guitar riff he used, not the vocal sample.

Oh really?! I didn't try to dig up any dirt on it, I just vented straight on the forums.

And I'm guessing there's no lawsuit...cause we all know the record company would win. Money wins trials in the U.S.

Just listened to the Avicii track... not sure how anyone can think he just happened to use the same original sample instead of straight up ripping off Cassius' usage of it.

just as random FYI the guitar riff that Pretty Lights sampled isn't from the Etta James track but from Judy Clay & William Bell - Private Number

Sampling is great. Being lazy and taking the sample someone else found and edited is not.

    This!

I love sampling in music, I'm fascinated by it and stumbling across a sample I recognise on an old record is one of my favourite things.

Conversely, hearing the same tired samples getting re-used by other producers is a pet peeve of mine.

Digging through old music looking for a great sample is an art - copying something from another producer to cash in is not.

I have no problem with producers using the same samples. Samples can be chopped and flipped in so many different ways. Here are two songs using the exact same sample, but two completely different sounds. These are only 2 of the 20+ songs that sampled the same record.

my thoughts exactly. Personally the others just ruined pretty light's track for me. Especially Flo Rida's, sounded so out of context and tacky. We are talking about textbook mainstream artists though, and they have never been notorious for taking risks or creating something unique. All about the benjamins. There is a difference between using a sample for artistic reasons and using it because of its hit potential.
