Buying the latest gear...Is is worth it?

Over the last couple of months, I have been on a upgrade progression. I have recently upgraded from Denon DN-S3700's to SC3900's. I am also looking at adding some Pioneer gear including 2 CDJ-2000Nexus and a DJM-2000. All of the above gear gets glowing reviews. However, if you really dig in not everything is as it seems. The 3900 has a few bugs that require upgraded firmware. If you go to the Pioneer forums, it looks like the 2000 Nexus is almost unusable in its current form. And the DJM-2000 hasn't had a firmware upgrade in over a year even though there are verifiable problems in the current firmware.

This puts me in an awkward position. Do I get the CDJ-2000 mk1 instead of the nexus series since most of the issues have been worked out? Do I stay away from the DJM-2000 since it doesn't look like Pioneer is going to fix it?

The bigger issue is why more people don't say something? This isn't cheap equipment. If you have this gear, is it working fine for you?

I played on a DJM2000, I thought the touch screen is crap anyway, so I wouldn't bother with it.

If you buy stuff that's broken, knowing that it's broken, then you are sending a message to the manufacturer that says "hey, I don't care if you fix your stuff or not! I'll buy it anyway!". You are contributing to the problem.

I like to upgrade my gear just as much as everybody else. There is nothing like unboxing something new, but you got to ask yourself, what exactly is the new gear going to let me do, that I can't do with my old gear, and is it worth the price to do it. Personally, I don't like to be the first kid on the block with the newest toy. I rather wait until it is out a while to see what bugs, if any it has, and what the manufacturer is doing about it to fix the problem. You also have to decide if the bugs that people are complaining about is something that will effect the way you play.

I wouldn't say that the CDJ 2000 Nexus is unplayable. Most of the problems that people have run into using them I have never encountered any of the issues mentioned here or the forum, although I am aware they might exist. Most people are making a big deal about the issues because the product wasn't perfect at release and they want to complain about how much money they spent on a product that has flaws. My point is, you are obviously aware of the flaws, it's whether or not the flaws affect you. If they don't, go the nexus. If they do, go the MK1.

As for the DJM, I would go with a 900.

^ Why would you choose the 900 over the 2000 mate? Curious as i'm on the hunt for one or the other.

This tells us that the large majority owning this gear is either too stupid or using it too little to even notice these shortcomings.

I say buy the best gear you can, based on your mixing style and your need. For example: If you like to scratch, why would you buy a Pioneer DDJ SX just cause its the latest and greatest. You would be best served with a pair of Tech 1200's. Also if your current gear does the job for you, why switch?? There isn't a contest based on gear, and you certainly won't get gigs based solely on your gear. Its a big waste of money if you ask me.

I had wanted to upgrade to the Denon 3900 from my 3700, but after looking at what I use it for, the 3700 is more than enough for my needs at the moment. I really did not see a good reason to waste my money.

If you're going with Pioneer for a mixer you'd be happier with the DJM 900 rather than the DJM 2000.
