btw. DJ Kutski has a pretty cool feature on his podcast called samplemania where he presents tracks from the harder styles like oldschool & breakbeat hardcore, hardcore, hardstyle etc. that sample other tunes. a few weeks ago for example was a classic happy hardcore track by charly lownoise & mental theo.

    Yeah definitely dude!

Quite often i'll play a 'new' EDM track while just chilling out with my father and he will often say "look through that pile of vinyl there and pick out *enter name here* and put it on" and sure enough, it is often the original track which the track i'm playing has sampled.

Either that or if a sound is familiar i'll do my best to track the original down and it has led me down some crazy music roads which i really enjoy and has definitely opened a whole new world of music to me. This is the part of DJ'n that keeps me going!

I don't always do it, but when a sample is really great I want to know where it's from.

There is a great website for finding out where a sample might come from: http://www.whosampled.com/

One of my most played throwback joints

It's not EDM but here's the new track...

I think a lot of cats these days do NOT worrry, nor do they care, about where the sample came from.

And the strange part about this track for me is that I actually discovered it listening to Hip Hop dj's! A-Trak dropped in back in hollywood years ago at a patio party... I miss hip hop so much. But I know the feeling of putting sets together and finding tracks that work with another set you may already have. Sampling is a beautiful artform.

growing up i used to listen to a lot of hip-hop so sample based house has always naturally kinda resonated with me a lot of times too. two of the prettywell known examples on the jazz/soul side incl. moodymann & theo parrish:

discovered the original track (weldon irvine - i love you) through this for example:

afternoon of faun - walter murphy, flipped in a really similar way as you see in hip-hop productions

a lot of times it isn't really an active hunt for the source but as i listen & play more jazz-funk, cosmic, disco, industrial, etc. (stuff like rinder & lewis, azymuth, throbbing gristle, roy ayers, ronnie foster) i find myself coming across a LOT of source material for some of my favorite house records.

It's always fun when your mates drag you to a disco night then you hear a track and realise Moodymann or someone sampled it.

This is an article I enjoyed recently: http://www.egotripland.com/four-tet-sample-flips/

I love finding samples of songs!
Hiphop has a lot of its roots in Jazz, Funk and Soul.

I have never looked at what the original track was that the sample came from I tend to go wow I like this artist /song, then listen to other songs from the same label and look at what other labels they have put stuff out on and listen to that label's stuff. oddly enough I have found some good underground music from youtube's suggested videos.
