    Correct.

A few things you got wrong:

    1) The authors are not gay.
    2) They never said The Mexican was a disco song (although it later became one).
    3) Breakdancing was inspired by Northern Soul.

A few things the authors got right:

    1) Everything.

    Fantastic book.

I thought Scratch was a pretty good DVD on DJ culture/history.

Dub Echoes is also a quality film and really shows how much influence the tiny island of Jamaica has had on DJing, from hip-hop through to dubstep.

so is that "last night a dj saved my life" book a good resource or not? I need to pick up these materials soon so I can read em and start putting info together and whatnot. Also thanks for all the other suggestions!

Hamza, things aren't false just because it puts gay people in positive light. Relax, nobody's gonna gob your bung just because you can appreciate that persecuted subcultures innovate artistically and musically to build a common uplifting bond, and that such artistic innovations filter into the mainstream.

Here are a couple other books I recommend:
    • Energy Flash (aka Generation Ecstasy) for a history of rave culture.
    • Adventures on the Wheels of Steel by Dave Haslam. This book is super legit and probably the second best history of DJing. Takes a slightly different angle than Last Night.
    • Paul Oakenfold: The Authorized Biography. This one will surprise you, it's a great read.

And yes, Last Night a DJ Saved My Life is the best book on the history of DJing. No doubt about it.
