I dunno about the lack of knowledge, I'm seeing a lot of young DJs spending a lot of time doing their homework on 80s and 90s house and techno classics, first wave garage, and so on. Then again this is within the underground scenes, thankfully I don't seem to find myself in the same social circles as the pirated-mp3 gig-stealing unpaid laptop EDM DJs that are so berated here, maybe I'm just lucky

Yeah and that's because a large proportion of the people here are, to quote Photek:

glorified mobile disc jockeys playing Top 40 hits
...or kids who just can't get their head around the fact that disliking an artist because of their artistically devoid music is generally not the same thing as being jealous of their fame and wishing THEY were the one playing bait electrohouse to mainstreamer fans at "concerts".

For me, putting effort into learning DJ skills came before spending time talking shit on forums. For people like you, the latter is a replacement for the former.

    Forums ruin careers.

I can relate to the part about underground being so exclusive, and shunning popularity gave birth to the garbage music we have now. I don't have time to follow all the micro-genres and niche scenes out there. Some artists kill their own chances at success by being un-relatable. I understand not selling out, but you still need to make music people like.

I've just tried to express my frustrations with this view in another thread (the deadmau5 one).

Didn't check to see if anyone quoted this one already, but..

How are we going to make the scene better?
I’m not a violent person, but I would say if you killed a few key people things might get better!

"The most interesting part is that due to technology, the art has moved from turntable skills to more selection and sequencing a set."

Where do you see DJ culture right now?

It seems like it’s more about marketing and promotion than it used to be. It also looks like there’s been a switch from creativity and credibility — to glorified mobile disc jockeys playing Top 40 hits. The most interesting part is that due to technology, the art has moved from turntable skills to more selection and sequencing a set.
