How long do you think this EDM surge will last? And why?

Title says it all really. We've seen EDM become super popular lately. How much longer do you think it'll keep that way? 5 years? 10 years? Why?

It'll last as long as people keep buying it. I'd say another 5 years or so max. By then, another genre will become the flavor of the week and dance music will go back to being for people who like dance music.

I can't see it dieing off any time soon. It think with everyone being into electro and dubstep, people are progressively going to start checking into less popular genres (trance, hardhouse, underground techno) and fall in love with them. And with mp3 being the choice of format, these files can exist in people's libraries permanently compared to tapes or cd's. Remember how easy it was to get rid of a cd or tape just because you don't listen to it, THEN realizing a year later that you miss that song? It won't happen anymore because mp3's are so easily stored. Therefore, the tracks you really love will be around for pretty much ever reducing the 'fad' idea.

It's a fad, so I feel like it will die relatively quickly. People are already moving on to the next thing.

Pics, ... erm Proof or it doesn't happen...

What exactly would that next thing be?

If I had to guess I'd say it's gonna stick around for quite some time. Think mainstream "Hip-Hop/R&B" in the last decade, and you know what I've got in mind...

There's still a lot of money to be made off of this, and as long as the last penny hasn't been squeezed out of this, it will last.

Hasn't it always been really popular? Commercial dance music has always been popular here, with songs hitting the pop charts regularly going back to when I was a teenager (and yes, they did have music back then, before anyway says it ).

I'm with Sigma on this. And I hope the surge continues. I want to see funky, deep house get some limelight too.
