I dont care about phrase matching while beat matching. As long as the snares line up im golden. From there I.find me a cue point and wait for a proper time to release. If im rushed i do it backwards and beatmatch on the fly.
BPM, then get the phrases matched
Phrase match, then adjust the BPM

it's got to be beatmatching.
What i find if you beat match in a rush you end up hearing pitch bending whiles in the mix.. if you do a decent job beatmatching a little nudge here and there is not noticeable.
I think you're misunderstanding him. He says "I don't care about phrase matching while beat matching" and neither do I, because if you're just beatmatching a track in your headphones it doesn't matter about the phrase matching. He clearly cares about phrase matching when the mix goes live though, because he goes on to say "from there I.find me a cue point and wait for a proper time to release".
Quality thread. Good points Sigma.
Unfortunately, Serato DJ Intro only has autogain, and I find it doesn't work very well. I am considering switching to Mixxx and doing a custom mapping of my controller, so I have access to any feature I would want. The downside to that is that Mixxx runs like shit on my Windows7 install. Maybe I'll switch back to maining Linux.
OK....fair enough. But this whole idea of treating beat matching and phrase matching as separate entities is silly. If you get in the habit of dropping on the 1 - even when you are getting the beats close in the headphones - you develop good habits. And if you choose to mix faster - hell, the second you get the tracks lined up - you can throw them into the mix without having to re-cue....because your mix is already in phase.
Matching beats and matching phrases are interdependent tasks that should happen simultaneously. Anything else is a repetition of work which makes no sense.
This. Sorry I wasnt clear.
Also how i go about things changes between vinyl and cdj's. With vinyl I tend to ride the pitch while phrased matched with cd's if i have time I will set the pitch in advance especially if im going for a longer mix. I had to actually think about this question because it all happens automatic and on the fly when Im mixing. I dont really think about any of it at all.

Another thing i'd like to add is when im using 3 or more decks I find beatmatching in advance critical.
You may think it's silly, but to a newbie trying to get down the basics, I prefer to give a wide birth rather than try to have them nail everything the first time. For any dj worth their salt, I agree. My thoughts of individualizing them are more aimed at the brand new person trying to learn the ropes as opposed to someone who has been doing this for sometime. Dropping on the 1, or after the 8, 16, 32 should become second nature, but I know of quite a few DJs on here that consistently miss drop ins and have been around for quite sometime.
