Connecting iPod to powered speakers without a soundcard?

I searched but can't get a straight answer. I want to connect an iPod to two powered speakers with either an xlr or 1/4 input without the use of a soundcard.

I've heard rumors of it being distorted and muffled through the headphone jack so my current solution is to purchase a pocket dock (http://www.amazon.com/SendStation-PD...ds=pocket+dock) and a conversion cable for 3.5mm to RCA (http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2)

With that setup, I can connect the iPod using my already purchased xlr/rca cables through the bottom of the iPod and it should be crystal clear. Am I missing anything?

My first question is why are you doing it that way?
    1) How should I know... Ask the client!
    2) If you put it where I can see it, I'm gonna look at it. If you don't want me to see it, keep it covered up.

This is for my friend's college dorm and they have no budget for any extras. Does that numark mixer have a sound card built in? If it doesn't, isn't that unnecessary as they won't be needing any of its features.

Does not work with a cable... very distorted.. your going from consumer to pro grade audio. I got the cable to test it for myself, people don't lie about that stuff. You need a small mini mixer. Behringer has some stuff.. I would rather go with Mackie or ART over them though.

Check craigslist of something for a small mixer.

I don't know what you guys are smoking, but I connect my iPod to a Yorkville NX55P powered speaker all the time using a y-cable (stereo 1/8" to dual-1/4"). Sounds great!

Just get an headphone jack to xlr cable. I use it for my cocktail hours. Just an iPod and 2 powered speakers. Never have I ever had an issue. 100s of times used.
