Do you guys even LIKE dance music and the scene?
Long before you even consider DJing - you should be an active member of your local scene, supporting other DJs, promoters, video producers, dancers.
I think the coming 3 hours before your set is kid of ridiculous. But showing up 30 minutes before your set is total rock star behavior (and no one here is a rock star). Come out and support your local scene and listen to what your friends are spinning...it not only helps you to know which direction to take your set, but it shows you give a fuck about more than yourself.
Oh trust me, I support my scene to the absolute fullest. I've been active in my scene for almost 20yrs. I support locals by coming out to their gigs and inviting them to play on my radio/or make a mix for the podcast.
I'm just saying, with how my work/other schedule is, I'd be lucky to show up to my gig 30mins before I go on.
If you have other reasons to show up late...fair play. It doesnt make sense to call in to a real job or even leave a big project to go and stand in the crowd so you can be at a gig early.
But most of the people on this site are newbies. Telling them as a new DJ to the scene that it doesnt matter if you show up early and support the party and other DJs is bad advice.
Sometimes I'm busy, tired, or just don't feel like being out. Showing up 30 minutes prior is not "rock star behavior". That's a stupid statement to make. I'm out at parties a lot that I don't DJ at, and I support my scene.

30 minutes to show up and set up is suffice- like the other guy who said "there is enough music to play" just do you in that 30 minutes lissen to what the other dj is outro'ing with and dont play that. Simple play what he didnt and go into the stuff you want to play and chances are the crowd wont even notice it unless its a classic like sandstorm/zombie nation etc. Surely you can overcome this problem. But if your opening up for Tiesto common sense would be not to play any Tiesto even the that FITH remix is slamming you know he is going to play it.

I already said that if you have a valid reason to show up late, no worries. But unless you are a globe trotting DJ - being tired is a bullshit excuse. If you cant get energized the night of an event, you are in the wrong business.
The people I know in the scene who show up at the last minute for their sets are considered prima donnas...but I am sure it is totally different in Harrisburg.
Last weekend I went to see a friend of mine play in San Francisco, and I was pretty late getting to the event. Got in line, and then I heard a familiar voice a few people behind me. Lo and behold it was my friend who was supposed to be spinning in about 10 minutes. Long story short, we both got to cut the line and I didn't have to pay, so everything worked out alright.
Depending on the event, I would recommend being there at least 30-45 minutes early. Though the earlier the better, in my opinion. You never know when somethings gonna go wrong, whether it's your car or the DJ before you fucking up, or being MIA, etc.
It does suck though when you have two or three cookie cutter DJ's in a row, who seem to have gotten all their music from DJcity, and show up right as the other is getting off....and the proceed to play nearly the same set. That makes me wanna![]()
