New Deadmau5 setup.....no hate, just debate!!

So after watching this video, does ANYONE think this is where the future of live performance is heading? Personally, I hope not. Looks very uninspired, performer looks actually bored doing it, and well, his back is toward the fucking crowd!
    Opinions?
Obviously, we've seen this type of product before (Smithson Martin Emulator) but I thought it was just a gimmick and was never going to get any momentum...but with mau5 using it, you know there's going to be a bunch of wannabe's jumping on the train.

He actually streamed live setting that up in his new monster of a studio when he was first playing around with it a few weeks back. Was pretty neat since its wired up to his virus so he can play it live. Also saw somewhere that this was just the initial shot at it, eventually it will be a large see-thru screen so he can face the crowd

Either way I dont think this is where live performance is headed, its just a cool one-off to see happen, like a lot of stuff thats get put on at these big shows. I really doubt your going to have a bunch of people starting to do dj/pa's with giant touch screens

I'm all set. Back towards the crowd is a total turnoff.

What's he doing there? Looking at a bar chart of his track sales broken down into the last 8 months?

What are people expecting an artist like him to do at a live show though?

EDIT - I think that would probably look cooler as a kind of desk, so he can face the crowd, then he could have a camera behind him putting it up on the big screen. At least he's doing something I hadn't seen before.

I saw something like that at a show down here in Auckland a few weeks ago.

It was actually a better setup than the above as it was a completely see through screen ( or maybe double sided screen?) so you could face the crowd and they could see the software as well as the operator.

It was the most pathetic shit I've ever seen. 4 guys were running it. One guy pressed auto sync, the other guy effed with the beat cutter, another guy selected tracks and some other asshole was standing there to complete their awesome Dj band. ( It boggles my mind that there is even such a thing)

You pretty much just show the crowd how worthless you are by showing the crowd how you press the auto-sync button every 5 minutes.

This is definitely the future for hipster Dj's. If I see one again im gonna spray my beer all over the screen.

I've always wondered if it would be worth hooking up an HDMI to a projector and displaying what's going on with Traktor/SSL/Ableton for the crowd. I think it'd be cool for us geeks to watch a pro use his/her program live, but I'm not sure if the 'common folk' would get it lol

I saw him dicking around with this on his ustream.. More of a light show then an actual music performance. I think its neat though.

I like to see innovation no matter what. Somewhat reminds me of Amon Tobin's setup. Not sure if it will pay off in the end but props for branching out there.

It's original... Pretty cool IMO. He's not going to do an entire set based off this platform but it's a pleasant change from just staring at the turntables and the occasional fistpumping that most DJ's do. Unfortunately he did look bored in that video, but I'm sure he could turn it into a good show.
