Yes, opening slot means to keep the vibes chill, once you get a floor going you will be free to lay down a couple bangers but keep it tame. Search deep into your archive and give your track selection some thought as you're going through it. Funky House, Tech House, House & Deep House with some Tech Funk is what I normally open with. Your job is to "sex" people up with your music and create a solid atmosphere for the guy playing the slot after you.

Minaj - Moment 4 Life (Katch or Kue edit)
Bright Lights bigger City (Ductape Remix)
Rihanna - Hard (Jody Broeder Remix)

    Rocketeer (KUE)
How Low Can Chords Go (Party Ben Bootleg)
    Ambiguous (Enferno)
    Minaj - Fly (Kue Remix)
    Higher (Mike Rizzo or Wideboys)
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Snow (DJ S 2012 Remix)
Cudi vs Drake - Memories to Blow (Still one of my fav mashups)
    E.T. (JD Live Recovery Mix)
    Day 'n' Nite (Crookers)

Opening is probably the easiest set possible, and perhaps the best because you get to set the pace then kick back and chill and learn from the headliner. I prefer to open.

Am I the only one who does not see a headliner that plays Top 40 as being the best because I can learn from the headliner? Maybe in other cities it is a bit different but at the clubs around here with the exception of Beta and "maybe" the Church, the majority of Top 40 DJs can fader slam every track in and the crowd doesn't care one way or another. Drinks + Rihanna or David Guetta and Top 40 headliners are usually fine.
The rest of the world is tired of US interventionism and the US taxpayer is tired of footing the bill for US interventionism.

None of my friends do this. In Cincy, I would say that a very high percentage are using 1200's. It's a great community. There are some very good turntablist dj's to learn from here. I don't know about other dj's in my city that I don't follow or support but the best club dj's here still mix 99% of the time.

I personally think opening set is the most important set and a little more difficult then peek.

On a side note; low energy/deep/tech house for a top 40 crowd? WTF is that all about

I think you are there - being ready to set up the guy after you - support them.

Your humility and commitment to giving the crowd a good night will get you very far.
