Need help picking out speakers for practicing in room and to play house parties

Hello all I recently have acquired a Vestax vci-380 and wanted to know what will be the best type of speaker to play house parties and to practice in my room with. I was looking to purchase the JBL JRX115I, but I do not know if I have to purchase a sub in order to hear the bass. I have a budget of 600$, so if anyone can help me out I will be very thankful.

Aren't those passive speakers? If they are you would need an amplifier as well. Honestly, when I started out I used a cheap setup that I bought for $200 and it worked fine for house parties. I like to use JBL Eon GR2's but they're pretty big and bulky for house parties and the bedroom. Perhaps someone has a better suggestion.

Here is the problem you are going to have to face.

For $600, you can get a really nice pair of 8 inch studio monitors. If you shop used, you can even get a pair of monitors and a matching sub. This will sound great for practicing and for just playing music in general. And will work for casual parties. It will probably (especially without the sub) NOT be enough for a crowded house party, especially with dancing. If you are careful you can have fun with it, if not you will blow your speakers.

The same $600 can get you a pair of lower priced powered PA speakers, used. Which will be great for house parties (eventually you will want to add a sub tho). But they won't sound as good or even have as deep bass as monitors. But they will go louder.

    So.. basically, it's a tradeoff.

My advice is, if you plan to have dance parties or to take your stuff out of your own house, you need to get PA speakers, not monitors. But be prepared to want a sub soon.

If you aren't so much planning a big dancefloor with pounding bass and plan to keep your speakers at home, go for the monitor + sub setup, it'll sound way better and you will enjoy it a lot more on a day to day basis.

PS: You can get something that's both loud and great sounding.. it just costs more than $600.

How big is your house? For 600, you could get a pair of Mackie Thumps and they're be more than enough for house parties and even small gigs to start making your money back. Even better, I would invest on a decent PA speaker for less than 600 like an RCF Art312, EV ELX, etc and build up once you get more money. One 12in PA is even enough for a house party.

Look on craigslist for something like a B-52 matrix, 2 powered speakers and a powered sub. should be right around your price range.

my suggestion is either the QSC K8's or the EV ZXa1's. Small enough for your house and loud enough to rock house parties without the cops being called!

I wouldn't touch the Mackie Thumps. My friend has a pair, actually I think HAD.. they might be broken now. I was not impressed with them and neither was he. If the budget is firm at $600 for two speakers, really USED speakers are the best bet. But for new, I would look at Alto brand. My friend, the same friend with the Thumps, has some Alto's now and is FAR happier with them. Alto seems to really be coming up as a good low-budget option. And, before anyone says that they're cheap Chinese.. yea of course they are. All these cheap speakers are, regardless of brand.

But look for used deals. I got my ZXA1's with padded cases for $700 used, in like-new condition. The deals are out there, you just have to look around and learn how much things are really worth.

I third the ZxA1. With a pair of small subs, I've done playback for 150-200 people in a small house no problem. I've used them for live sound for audiences of under a hundred with good results as well.

You don't want the JRX, it's trash.

i bought 2 new 15 inch Tapco Thump Speakers (active), 2 new speaker stands, and new stands case for $600 on ebay. They are perfect for ur needs, as they were for mine. i have done parties up to 100-150 people with them and they get the job done. However they stopped making them and continued making Mackie Thumps. i havent had any problems after 2 years

I invested into Yamaha DXR12's. They were way cheaper than QSC K12, but sounded way better. I also listened to DXR8 next to K8, and was really impressed with low-end the DXR8 delivered. You can get a pair of DXR8 for less than $1,000 if you can get nice discount at a store. It is more than your budget, but it's worth the money.
