    i dont play out anymore but my main gig was a bar in darlington, i started out in the basement with my own decks and mixer playing house but then i got the saturday job in the main bar, the setup was pretty poor but the sound was decent enough. i was playing soul/funk/disco and a bit of old house and the odd random track thrown in. the night was a success, busy every week with all ages and quite a few people stayed for long periods of the night, the stuff worked for what i needed, i could beatmatch on it and pull off a few effects, loops etc. and to be honest if they had the same setup in a club, admittedly with a better sound system i reckon the night could still be a success. i play at home on a pair of 1210s and a djm800, id prefer cdjs but cant afford them so i just use this. back to the original point in the thread though i respect the lad for djing on his laptop, he is making a good mix with what is considered a fairly amateur setup(his posted mix is actually pretty good) and all i was saying is i can sympathise with him coming across rubbish gear and instead of turning up with his own stuff that could get damaged he has found a novel way of solving it

    Even small towns can have a good scene; it depends who puts the effort in.

    (and how long they stay before fucking off somewhere better! ) haha

    Yeah, I think that's gonna happen too. A CD is just a medium for storing digital music - there's more efficient methods of doing that and has been for years, so CDJs have been outdated for a long time. It's different with vinyl, because it's all about the feel with that. If you changed a CDJ so that you connected a USB stick instead of it having a CD drive it would feel no different whatsoever, so there's no sense in sticking with optical discs.

    True.

    I guess venue size isn't always directly correlated to the standard of gear too. The venue I am playing at in a couple of weeks can probably only hold 200/250 but it has top of the line set up including a Funktion One soundsystem.

    @Stu-C

    While I realise and have encountered SOME technical issues before, for me the OP is making out as if there is a technical issue at EVERY gig. It just seems like a bit of an excuse to me

    yep, and by the same token, a big nightclub can have a shit sound - it all depends on who's running the 'system Big ups on your gig!

    The top model cdjs will always have cd drives, but I can imagine a lower model being introduced without one

    wait, you mean a cdj without cds?

    i think they would change over to something like just straight usb control decks or something. same design but a new name would surface i feel. I feel that an entry level deck like that would make a killing right now
