we have a sound engineer, and we're a small town club - I go to other cities, and the 1st person I'm usually introduced to is the sound engineer. Venues that care do exist, and they're in competition for customers against the shitty kind of 'clubnights' that are held in unsuitable venues, purely for profit, with uncaring/clueless owners & amateur file jockeys that you seem to be talking about.
There, I've said it!
Hell, even the illegal raves & messy beach parties I played at back in the day had at least a dozen sound engineers poised by the system all weekend...forget 'pro' and 'semi-pro' and a difference in standard - there is a standard, and it starts with sound quality for everyone doing it properly.

Beach raves are more likely to have pro sound guys than rando bars
Well, you do live in darlington so its to be expected there I guess.
The only places where I have had really shit gear is small bars.
The warehouses, studios and big clubs I've played in have had decent equipment pretty much all the time, I can only think of one place that didn't and that was a 300 capacity club in Sheffield.
I think maybe the difference is I play places where the people in charge actually give a shit, as much as it is a business, these business owners realise that providing good quality equipment works for the club. This doesnt mean they have 6 CDJ2000s and a DJM2000 and spend ludicras amounts of money on gear that they just don't need, its generally an A&H/DJM and CDJ1000, both of which don't cost that much for a profit making business.
So high horse it is not, but I will not play for clubs that don't give a fuck, it is as simple as that.

Maybe England has had a better club culture over the decades than the US and, with that, comes clubs that are actually prepared for the needs of the DJ. I recall, back in the mid-to-late 90s, you had major EDM nights in what amounted to pretty darn nice clubs - i.e. Fabric. At that same point in the US (at least in LA), there were weeklies, mostly at bars (some at small clubs which did have legit equipment and a sound guy), and undergrounds - both the underground and bar nights were notorious for crap gear... dilapidated 1200s using pennies on top of Stanton 500s as a weight.
