I would not forget about the Yamaha DXR series of speakers. 2 DXR115 and 2 DXR118 for about 800 each are one helluva system. I was looking at getting some K12's with KW181's and the Yamahas sounded better in my opinion, and the DXR115's are a lot better on their own then the k12's. The DXR115's can crank really hard. These are what I am saving my pennies for. They sound great. You could even have 4 DXR115's within your budget.

RCF makes some great speakers too, but I do not have a whole lot of experience with them. But for me it would be between the Yamaha's or RCF line of speakers.

For receptions that don't involve a ton of heavy dance or hip hop, yes, very much so. People love the way they look as well. Although I would personally bring two of them, mostly because I hate it when setups look off-center.

The L1 is also about the most convenient setup ever for corporate events or background music.

I've used active Mackies tops and subs, they were awesome... could have used a little more low end, but acoustics in venues is also a big part. My main setup I used for weddings were some Harbingers tops and 18" sub cabs powered by QSC GX5 amps(1 for each top/sub in crossover mode), and I was told to turn it down a lot, TONS of bass and very clear highs... setup ran about $2000-2400 total cords included (Neutriks)

I'd choose self powered cabs over an amp for something like that easily. They are I think in many cases much better for sound quality I believe.
Pair of Pioneer CDJ-2000 CD Players, Xone:92 Mixer. Pair of RCF-312A Loudspeakers and 1 RCF 4Pro 8003 18" Sub.

Only if you're comparing bottom feeder gear or dealing with someone who completely doesn't know what their doing & in that case they stand just as good a chance of goofing up the sound of even a powered system.

If I had to play only for people who liked the music because they heard it on the radio, it wouldn't make me happy. -- David Guetta
