VA DJ NEEDS HELP!! caps is necessary.

Hey guys, a dj in my area just had his 1200 mk5's, macbook pro with red cover, roadrunner cases, and rane ttm57 sl stolen today in broad daylight out of his car. Just want everyone I can reach to be aware if they happen to see this go up for sale somewhere. I'm going to attach a picture of his stuff, and where he can be reached. Just trying to help the guy out.

Unfortunately, technics turntables, rane mixers and apple computers look all like one another. Things to do when you buy (expensive) gear like that is to note all the serial numbers, and tag the equipment with your name on it. And never, ever leave your gear in your car unattended of course, everytime I heard of someone having heir gear stolen was because they left it in the vehicle.

Check ebay and craiglist to find anyone local who's trying to resell these, also check any local pawn shops.

A friend has his 1210's stolen recently. I stopped by a couple of local pawn shops to help him look for them. One of the owners gave me some good advice.

I was walking in and saying, "I'm trying to help my friend recover his stolen gear. Have you seen these turntables?"

This guy said that sometimes when a pawn shop has purchased something stolen, they may not know it's hot when they take it in. If they find out it's stolen, and that someone is looking for it, rather than doing the right thing and turning it over to the police, they will just sell / trade the gear to another shop in some other city. This way, they may get their money back by selling it, and they don't have the hassle of dealing with the police or filing for insurance to get back the money they paid out for the pawn, etc.

He suggested just going in and saying you are a DJ and are " ... always looking to buy used audio gear, speakers, turntables, mixers, anything professional quality..." Give them your card and ask them to keep you in mind whenever they get gear in.

He told me this way if the turntables happen to show up in a local shop, the owner of the shop may remember you and call, hoping you will buy them. After you go look and verify these are the tables you're looking for, you can ask him to hold them for a couple of hours "while you go to the bank" or whatever, and then go contact the police.

Check back in from time to time, as some thieves will sit on the stuff for a little while before selling to the pawn shops.

Again though, serial numbers are important for verification and evidence.

Man that truly sucks. Maybe he can see if his auto insurance will cover it. Sometimes they will cover items stolen from cars.

Also, I heard (don't know if its true or not though) that even if you can identify the gear as yours you may still have to buy it from the pawn shop.

    Edit:

Also don't look for all this stuff in one spot. If I were a criminal looking to get rid of this stuff, I wouldn't sell it all to one place..the mixer here, the decks there, the macbook somewhere else. Did he have lo-jack on his MacBook? If he did, maybe he can trace it if they try to go online.

... every dj in here goes to local pawn shop with fingers crossed hoping to find this setup

Sorry to hear that man, I'm affraid it's loooonng gone by now. It was definitely someone that knew him or knew what they were looking for. Hopefully he has good insurance.

That sucks that he left them in his car. I always get paranoid when I have my flight cases in the car. Back in the day I retrofitted a normal vacation suitcase which happened to fit two CDJs perfectly. I used that with a luggage tag on it to haul my stuff around. Whenver they see flight cases they know there's expensive equipment in there, but nobody would ever bother my crappy looking suitcase.

"Out of sight, out of mind" and "help an honest person stay honest... lock your doors" were two pieces of advice my father often gave me.

I like the idea of the "crappy old suitcase" mentioned above. I do some weeknight shows (trivia, etc) which need a small setup. I keep this gear in my compact family car, but it all fits in the trunk, so it's hidden from sight. I also keep the doors/trunk locked between trips back and forth when I have to lug gear.

The computer would be the thing which would set me back the most if stolen, as I could rent speakers/mixer/tables, or even "laptop DJ" if I had to until I bought new gear. Therefore, I usually leave the computer locked in my car until my last trip into the building, so no one wandering through the building/hotel/etc grabs it while I'm in the parking lot. Either that, or I will wear the backpack I carry them in as I go back and forth from the parking lot.

Hope he can find the scuzzball, or at least the gear!

I have this same exact set except with a white 2010 macbook this just made me cringe inside. I'm about to go write down the serial numbers for all of my gear and get lo-jack on my macbook.
