Thread: Rude woman threatened to spill beer all over my decks

  1. #61
I've never had someone threaten to damage my gear but I'd probably just calmly inform them that my insurance company would cover it, and then sue her to recover their costs. and that I would be sueing her for my lost income for the time I'm without equipment and then the bar will ban her permanently and she'll probably be arrested. Then just smile and say "go for it, I'd love to have you buy me a new mixer".

I get a few pushy people though and I don't know why they think it's a great idea to request songs that are nowhere near the genre being played. My Friday and Saturday night spot is what could best be described as a nerd bar, they have a library of board games, RPG books and card games; Xbox and PS3 stations; video game themed food and drinks, etc. I play a wide variety of music including, industrial, nerdcore, VGM, EBM, belly dance music, irish trad, house, trance, electro, 80's and dubstep. What I don't play is hiphop/rap, that's the music that the people who beat up our patrons in school listen to and they hate it with a passion and the owners can't stand it either. I get people who are obviously not a card-carrying geek that come up and ask for lil wayne or nikki minaj and then act like they've been insulted when I tell them we're not a hiphop club. If they get pushy about it I've got a rotating list of responses that I use.

What do you think the DJ at the hiphop club you usually go to would say to me if I went up and told him his music sucks and that he needs to play something better like country or finnish goth metal?
The bar pays me X, if you want to pay me more than that I'll let you pick out the music.
The owner told me that if I play any more lil wayne, etc she's going to drown me in the fryer while shoving a rabid weasel in my pants.
This is my spare laptop, I don't have any good music on it.
Buy me a drink and I'll try and fit it in, I'd like a pitcher of scotch.
    I don't have a hiphop license.
That girl over there said she'd sleep with me if I don't play any (artist name here).
Only if you can tell me, without using the internet...
-How many hit dice a beholder has.
    -Who played the 10th doctor.
-The formula for calculating the volume of a sphere.
-The name of the 3rd boss in the plague wing of icecrown citadel.

I have to agree with what has been said that if you actually want to get paying gigs then you have to play for your crowd but within reason. If 50 people are loving what you are doing and 1 person comes up with something totally in left field from what you are playing then you play to the majority but if you are playing somewhere that has a diverse crowd you may want to switch it up to try to play a little bit for everyone. I usually make it a point to call someone out when they request something that is totally at the other end of the spectrum from what I am playing. I might get on the mic and say this is a special request for so in so sitting right over there.

I think you could have handled the situation a lot better. Dealing with these kinds of people and requests goes with the territory. You said that they hired you to play whatever you wanted, you didn't say they hired you to play a certain genre, therefore you could have played anything. Your mistake was to act like all these people were there for YOU and then get offended by her request. Her mistake was to come at you the way she did by saying "play something everyone will enjoy". The thing is, you can't control what people will say to you and how they say it and believe me, I have had my share of rude bitches telling me whatever I was playing sucked and to play "my song" and my response is always this "telling the DJ his music sucks is not exactly a good way to get the DJ to play your request" You can't control what they say but you can only control how you react. I would have asked her well what would you like to hear. I would say more than half the time people say something like that "play something everyone will enjoy" they have no idea what they even want to hear. They always seem to notice when they don't like something but ask them what they want and they have no answer. I then would have explained to her that this is what they wanted me to play to shake things up a little bit from the norm and there seems to be a lot of people that really like it. Put the blame on someone else, you are only doing what you were told and this is the only type of music I have because this is what they wanted me to play, that would have stopped everything right there. It would not have gotten to the point of her threatening to damage your gear. I have been at this for 23 years and not once as anything ever been spilled on my gear or did anyone ever threaten to spill anything on my gear. Now if that ever were to happen, I would immediately cut the music, and do exactly what Kid Capri did, call them out in front of everybody and let everyone know that this person just threatend to ruin my equipment and then look at them and say...now why u want to do that? Thats not nice, lets all enjoy the party and the music and then let them off the hook because you made your point and they will get it after that.

I had a drunk girl dump her beer on my macbook pro and kill it about 2.5 years ago

After that, I would've acted no differently than the op. If some girl would threaten me, I'd prob do the blackest's post and get some girl i know to take her down

No pity for however I choose to embarass the girl threatening me. Maybe it just takes losing a 2000 dollar laptop to feel like that though

Standard. I have a lot of women that are willing to beat down some dame that doesn't know how to act right for me.

Just like how I take care of dudes that don't know how to act for them.

Here's one from a few months ago, there's some rough spots since it was all kind of off-the-cuff, but there's some fun stuff in there.

I agree, but he did look a bit like it was something she'd done one too many times and he was fed up.
