Lightbulb Rude woman threatened to spill beer all over my decks

This woman comes up to me while I am trying to mix and says "could you play something that we all would enjoy?" I replied well I'm sorry its not easy to please everyone. Then she goes on to something else and kind of darts. Off then she comes back and says "you really should not be playing this. (was mixing deep house, progressive house, tech house). She also said something to the effect of -No one is interested in hearing it. Its stupid." I replied with "It's what?" (even though I knew what she said). It was too early in this outdoor event. I don't think she was even drunk. I think I also said "do you speak for everyone here?" I guess that made her really mad.

Then she says "how about if I come and pour beer all over your equipment?" I said. "Try it". Then she said something else and I was seriously not impressed. I popped right up around the decks and stood right between her and them until she walked away. Then when I saw her walk by again I followed her back to her table with her group. I said Hi to them. Then I turned to her and I said. Are you still going to pour beer on my equipment. (Because I was about to pack up and take off). Then she pretended to laugh it off and say she was kidding in front of her group and tried to make me look stupid. Then I said "don't you threaten me like that because I don't think that's funny." Then they left after about 30 min later. Thank god. I think we need a forum topic called 'Strange requests and hostile audiences'.

Can't believe you followed her to the table, then later said I dont' think it's funny. Blow it off... why wouldn't you play what she wanted to hear? Sounds like you have a chip on your shoulder and play only what you want and not what your crowd wants?

Do you have a girlfriend? She was probably just trying to flirt. I would've spun it around and flirted back.

I was mad. No one even noticed what was going on. I don't regret any of it. I blew it off until she kept coming back and saying things. I can blow someone off until they threaten to break 6k of my equipment. It took a lot of money/planning and time to set myself up for the gig. Someone threatens to break it all? Yes I take that seriously.

The only chip on my shoulder is that I was afraid she was going to do it. I was there to play what I wanted. I was also playing music that others wanted to hear as well and were enjoying! That was the point of the gig. It wasn't a paid gig either. No this was some older late 60's. She was a wacko Austin. But I also won't get into the discussion of playing for myself vs other people. My goal is to cater to my own crowd and if they like what I play then I have accomplished that goal. That might make me different from most DJ's out there but if so I am glad for it.

You should know how to read a crowd and how to handle one.
Seems like you are bad at the latter and questionable at the former.
Oh whats that you say? You wanna out check my soundcloud?

Why are you guys vilifying him? He already said he was hired there to play what he wanted; why would he have the latest J Cole or Taylor Swift track in his music collection if he went there to play house music? At what point is it ever ok to threaten to wreck someone's equipment because of something so petty and trivial?

I agree, although @OP you still need to maintain a certain level of professionalism. If you have a problem with a guest then alert the staff and have them take care of it. Following someone back to their table like that just makes you look bad.

Next time you take on a similar gig, make sure that the contract states that if someone damages your gear that the owner of the establishment has to reimburse you. That way you can just ignore them and call security and if something happens to the gear then you are covered.
