    Crown XLS2000 or Peavey IPR3000

Peavey IPR3000 or Crown XLS2000 for (2) Peavey SP4 speakers. Which is a better fit for my (2) speakers? Speakers can handle 1,000 watts continuous, 2,000 watts peak.

    Specs of IPR3000 ($400.00)

    • - 1640W RMS x 1 at 2 ohms
    • - 930W RMS x 1 at 4 ohms
    • - 470W RMS x 1 at 8ohms
    • - 1490W RMS x 2 at 2 ohms
    • - 840W RMS x 2 at 4 ohms
    • - 440W RMS x 2 at 8 ohms

    Specs of Crown XLS-2000 ($400.00)
    - Stereo, 2 ohms: 1050W
    - Stereo, 4 ohms: 650W
    - Stereo, 8 ohms: 375W
    - Bridged mono, 4 ohms: 2100W
    - Bridged mono, 8 ohms: 1300W

    Thanks for your help!

I own an IPR3000. I love how light they are. I've never had any problems with Peavey. That's all I own. I'd recommend it! Not sure about the Crown amp.

    EDIT:
You should look for something with much more power though. There are many people on this forum who know much more about the "rules" regarding RMS, continuous, and peak power handling. I DO know that it's bad to underpower your speakers. Look for something closer to the continuous power rating. I think the rule of thumb is to power 2x the RMS rating, which is typically the same as the continuous power rating.

With the Peavey, you'll only be putting out around 400W per cab, and even less with the Crown.

If I'm wrong about any of this, I'm sure somebody will correct me.

    I hope this helps!

Does anyone have any suggestions for an amp to power my SP4's then? I would like to spend about $400-$600.

I do mostly wedding gigs and therefore it doesn't have to be an overkill.

    Thanks everyone.

I only run my SRX cabs with 300 watts a piece for weddings and it's plenty. They're rated at something like 1600 continuous. I only give them more if I run them without subs. If I were you I'd just Pick up a Crown XLS 2500. That way, if you ever need to run them to their potential, you can grab another XLS 2500 and run a pair bridged.

This is a myth. Underpowering will just mean you get less than the maximum SPL out of the loudspeaker. If you underpower but need that SPL, you may overload the amp before reaching the performance limit of the loudspeaker. That's not good, but ever since amplifier manufacturers started to include clip limiters you can't bypass, it's not the end of the world (note: check to make sure your amplifier has a clip limiter). Hitting the limiter every once and a while won't destroy a loudspeaker.

Basically, if you don't clip the amplifier, using a lower powered amplifier isn't a problem at all. If you hit the clip limiter, it may have been a good idea to get a better matched amplifier - you won't get any more of the SPL you need and there's a chance you could damage the loudspeaker.

What do you think is a better buy? The Crown XLS2000 or the Peavey IPR3000 for the $?

Thanks, jayhwk. I thought there may have been a few things that weren't 100%. Just trying to start helping some people out if I can!

I use a pair of SP4's & I push them with a Peavey CS800S. I bought both of them in 2004. I'm not sure if Peavey still makes that amp or not OR, if its changed much.

    Hope this helps
    1) How should I know... Ask the client!
    2) If you put it where I can see it, I'm gonna look at it. If you don't want me to see it, keep it covered up.

If it were me, I'd buy the IPR3000. It's the more powerful of the two, and I haven't heard of any problems on any of the sound forums with this amp. They're getting quite popular so there's quite a few out there.

You might be able to find it cheaper. I've seen them listed for as low as $350 at times. Haven't checked recently...
