    Smile Sub Questions

Finally signed up for DJF2.0 after lurking for the past few months. A little background:

I currently DJ smaller events for <100 people (weddings, school reunions, pre-teen dances at my local community centre, etc.) and use a pair of Yorkville NX55P with a single LS200P sub. Even though the sub is underpowered when paired with these tops, I find it fills in the bottom end just enough for these types of events. I love the size & weight (55lbs), and I wall/corner load where possible, but it'd be nice to have access to more bass when needed. I'll be doing a wedding in October in a large room in an old, restored warehouse made of brick. Expected attendance is 130 and I have a feeling this is a party crowd. The venue has their own sound system, but it's two pairs of 15" (possibly 12") with no sub. Needless to say, I'll be bringing my own equipment, if only for peace of mind and familiarity with my own gear. Now, the dilemma...do I:

    1) buy a matching sub? (used NX200P for $300 cdn)
    http://www.usedvictoria.com/classifi...200-P_17590183

    or

    2) sell my LS200P and get an NX720S? (used for $560, 78lbs)

    or

    3) rent an additional/bigger sub when necessary

The big caveat with option #2 is that the NX720S is in pretty rough shape cosmetically. Which brings me to my 2nd question:

How easy is it to clean up a sub that has scratches & marks all over the grille & ultrathane? If it's in rough shape cosmetically, it may have been treated poorly by the previous owner, meaning there may be unknown internal issues now or down the road.

Thanks in advance. Keep in mind that I'm not looking for earth-shattering bass. As mentioned, I'm content with the bottom end the LS200P currently provides, but would like more when doing those larger (100+ guests) events.

Id probably get a second matching one however I haven't got any experience with Yorkville so I'd be asking Al Poulin. As for cosmetic damage, sand down the scratches on the enclosure and then reapply the duratex finish. Have a look around on either here or LAB lounge on PSW - I know there was a recentish thread (6 months) about reapplying the the duratex finish. For the grill, take it off, sand it down and repaint it with spray paint.

The LS/NX200Ps are OK little subs for smaller gigs. They do work better as a close-coupled pair (as opposed to a single one), but in your position I would not buy a used powered sub simply because there is usually no warranty AND you just don't know if its been abused or how it's been used at all. A single (new) LS720P (which is 100$ cheaper than the NX version but has carpet instead of the ultrathane hard finish) is a good match for the 55Ps when corner/wall loaded. If not, you generally need a 1/1 ratio top to sub. the NX55Ps and 720Ps were designed to be used together 1/1, but I often use my 55Ps with my single corner loaded 720P and this works fine. If I want/need more output fomr my 720P, I set the Boost frequency to 70hz instead of 45 and this gives it a bit more output before limiting.

Another option if the 720P is too much $$$ would be a single Yamaha DXS12 or DXS15. Check out my review on the DXS12 if you get the chance. Performance is VERY close to the 720P when the Yamaha's Xtended LF mode is activated and price in the US is 699$ for the 12'' or 799$ for the 15''. If the 12'' was close to the performance of the 720P, I'm pretty sure the DXS15 would actually outperform it. Just some ideas... Feel free if you have any questions at all.

    Welcome to the forum!

If you have a Long & Mcquade nearby, rent a LS701P or an LS801P. L&M rents cheaply. It will give you a chance to learn about what more sub can do and determine how much sub is enough. You should be able to cover 130 boistrous people easily with an LS701P and it will keep up with NX55Ps. An LS801P will create more thump than what you will need. Keep your LS200P for your small gigs.

Good Luck with all of it!

The 701P is another excellent option Subzeero. I forgot about it! Not quite as good sounding as the 720P, but a little more output capability which can come in handy for those louder crowds. I owned the LS700P for many years and it worked great with my NX55Ps. The new 701P finally has XLR ins and outs which is about time (the 700P was all 1/4'') although it is a bit heavier. The 801P is too big and too heavy IMO and would probably be overkill in most situations.

Thanks for all your suggestions. The 801P is out of the question for ownership. I would love to buy an LS720 or NX720 brand new, but I'm comfortable buying used gear if it's in good shape - I got a steal of a deal on my current gear, so I can't justify a brand new sub.

The used NX720 is actually at L&M for $500 + tax. I rarely find good used pro audio gear there, hence my interest at the moment.

If I can negotiate $250 for the used NX200, I think that'd be a good situation.

Well.. on paper.. it looks like a pair of NX200P (side by side.. NOT separated) will give you more output than a single LS720.
BUT, the LS720 will not only beat a single NX200P, but it will also go 10Hz or so deeper, which will give you a much more full bass sound.

So, it really depends on what you care about.

Based on what you have said about the gigs you do and your satisfaction with the gear you using now, I'd say that getting the additional NX200P for $300 is the right move for you. That way you will get the extra bass you want for this gig, but you'll still have the option of bringing out just one sub for smaller events. As well as the peace of mind of knowing that if one sub dies at a bad time, you are covered.

You could also just rent a sub from ong and mcquade for 15 to 20 bux when needed.
