lots of untz!
a major characteristic of house is having a kick on each beat.

House? Like 80's inspired stuff?
Or SHM 'house'?
There's different styles. I don't know if there are concrete factors. Maybe there are and I just don't know them
The easiest way might just be to load up youtube or beatport or whatever and look through bigger name 'house' producers, techno producers, trance, etc, and listen for the commonalities and differences
Maybe someone else will find a wiki definition or something but I just listen to similarities

You really have to think about the depth of that statement though. First it has to be good music, quite subjective, but if you just imagine the normal elements in music or a band you get a decent idea. Then you have to make it danceable by emphasizing rhythm one way or another, usually through percussion or bass -- but it could be through melody just as easily.
When you have those two, you have House!

You could say house is like techno, but with more variation in rhythm and, most important of all, FUNKYNESS
*gets killed for comparing two completely different music genres*
