Small problem

Hi everyone! I'm new here and i hope you guys will help me out!

I want to become a good DJ, i just want my friends to recognize me and acknowledge that i even exist (im kinda unpopular at school)
you guys already know where this is headed. anyways im prepared for a brutal year of studying and practicing and mixing as a DJ.
HOWEVER. some things are missing.

1. I have pretty much no experience actually trying to mix, but i'm always looking at tutorials
2. i have all the time in the world so practicing isn't an issue
3. I'm picking out some n00b gear soon, do you guys have any suggestions?
4. i have a laptop with music and some software to use (so dj gear is the only thing im missing)
5. a DJ name, it isn't really important right now because i'm starting out but i always want to think im someone else (if that makes any sense)
i'm into trance and house/electro music if that helps

also i have a pet ferret, i like dogs and cat-like animals (ex. puma or a tiger) im also interested in surreal things and fictional stuff, also mechanical and futuristic things, not exactly steampunk (if that also makes sense)
maybe one of u can come up with a sweet name
maybe throw the letter "x" in there somewhere
6. also what songs are good to practice trying to mix them both, something simple

For starters, you have to be into DJing for the right reasons...doing it because it's the popular thing right now and you want to be popular is not the right reasons and that will show soon enough. Doing it because you love music and want to share music with the world is a great reason to do it. So before you start down this road, make sure that you are in it for the right reasons because this is an expensive and time consuming hobby/profession.

1 & 2 - Tutorials are good to watch to get learn the ideas behind different techniques, but nothing is like practicing. You will need to do lots of practicing. The most important thing for you to practice at first is going to be beatmatching. This is a skill that all aspiring DJs should have. You should be able to do this manually and not rely on the sync feature found in alot of software. Sync IMO is not cheating, I use it all the time, but I can also manually beat match. Often times the computer sync is doesn't quite work right and I have to turn sync off to get the tracks to mix properly. So learn how to manually beatmatch...

3 & 4 - What kind of software do you have already and is it a legit copy (if not decide on a software package and go buy it). Seeing as you have a laptop, you like most beginners are probably going to want to start with a controller. You should make a decision on what software you like before deciding what controller to get. So go off and do some research on different software packages and then come back and ask a more informed question.

5 - You don't need to worry about this so much right now, but it is something to think about. Alot of people just use their actual names some people take on stage names. Whatever you decide, you need to find a name that suits your personality, the music genre that you play (funk master flex is a great hip hop name but horrible trance name) and is timeless (DJ Outtie 5000 would've been great in 1995 but is god awful today).

6 - Any music that you enjoy listening to or think that others will enjoy listening to is great to practice with. Practice with the music you want to play when you DJ...

DJ for the love of the music bro. Life is not a popularity contest, maybe in high school but all that shit get thrown out the window when you grow up. I am a DJ for the simple reason that I love music and have always been fascinated with what DJ's do as far as mixing and blending. Do it for the love man because just like Highline said, it will show if you are doing just because it is the cool thing to do.

Listen to these cats.. If you do it for the right reason, things will come together easier than trying to force it. This is something we take very seriously because we have put an ungodly amount of time into our craft. There are so many fake-ass wannabe dj's it's sickening. Don't be a wankster!

2. Save your money and buy proper gear! I suggest turntables, mixer, and all the vinyl you can find. If you must, get a nice macbook. If you're into a certain genre like electronic then maybe get a really nice kit, like the S4. Don't waste your money on something you will outgrow in 6 months.

3. Skip the DJ name and use your real name or a variation of your name. Don't associate yourself with " lil' " because that's wack in my opinion.

4. If you want to learn to mix, grab some instrumentals or get in with a record pool. Pay for your music or at least a music service.

Anything else, just ask. Oh yeah, support your peers (other dj's) as much as possible. Listen to mixtapes in the same fashion, like its your religion.
