I'm not a latino but I'll rock a party! I've done parties for Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans and Columbians. I don't even speak spanish but good music is easy to identify because it's universal.

I'm Mexican but would rather play Cumbias, I just love those drums. I'll listen to corridos, but won't play them at a party not even for cash. I'm a hip hop scratch dj, so don't really get into Latin music that much.

    I'm Latin and I'm a drum n bass head

I probably won't know my way around Latin music enough to DJ it. But I stay totally away from the banda/nortena/grupero stuff lol.

Salsa music is not supposed to be mixed

the great DJs of Salsa are collectors and musicologists

the measure is how much they know about the music they are playing and how it applies to the dance and also the relevance to different nationalities and cultures.
it is a huge huge spectrum

it can be mixed sure, but the real salsa crowd dont need nor want it mixed
mix your merengues, bachatas, mambos & reguetons

I got with a Peruvian girl. Her dad is a Salsa instructor and their whole family loves to dance... I hated anything Salsa or Latin (music) at that time. Their family was ALWAYS playing some terrible music or going to a festival and dancing their ass off!

After we broke up, and after having a daughter, I started to miss it a little. 5 years later, I fell in love with it (latin music) by watching my daughter react to the sounds and seeing her develop into quite the little Salsa dancer herself.

I used this influence to develop my own unique style of selection/mixing and it has actually helped me to separate myself from other dj's in my area. Only a couple dj's play latin house in the city, and none that I know of play it in the burbs.

I'm of Dominican Decent. Parents born and Raised in Dominican Republic and then came to NYC in their Teens. I'm NYC born and raised myself. I play everything from House to Merengue, bachata, salsa and all that good stuff.

Mixing salsa isn't that hard as long as you can find the claves for the tempo. It is true that most salsa heads can do fine without it being mixed but in the club setting you gotta do your job lol.
