Thread: Want to give "DJ Partner" the finger: Advice needed on new speakers.

  1. #11
    Update.

I got a quote from PSSL for 2x M-Audio GSR-12 300 Watt 12" 2 Way Powered speakers. With the shipping to SA + Tax it amounts to $625.79 so it's relatively in budget. (Read a bunch of reviews, all positive)

Will just need 2 x XLR cables and 2x speaker stands then I'm set.

I'll check out all the other suggestions as well though.

those speakers are garbage. that's why there $179. had a friend that had 4 and blew all 4.

if your going tp be using just tops I would look into a 15" tops not 12" top.

there is not a good bass response in those 12" top

Your friend must have been doing something wrong if he managed to blow four of his speakers.

Have you read this thread at all? He is only looking for temporary speakers for a few weeks until he can upgrade, and won't be doing any major events in the meantime.

Therefore, there is no need for him to get 15s at the moment if he will upgrade to a nice set of 12 in a couple of months and eventually add a sub.

Quentin Legend, a few members own the GSR series and are quite happy with them, so check out this thread for their opinions: http://www.djforums.com/forums/showt...-GSR-10-Review

I owned a pair as well and found them to be quite nice, especially for the low price. I got a package deal from UniqueSqaured, two GSR-12, stands and cables all for $450. Not sure if they still have this deal.

I'd take the bigger gigs and rent the gear. just keep doing gigs and buy a piece at a time as you go so you get quality equipment. With every new piece of gear you'll eventually own it all and start making a bigger profit as it pays for itself.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

Looks like I'll be getting 2 x GSR-12's to start with.

The DJ scene in South Africa is very different than the DJ scene in America, cash isn't as good unless your big.

Working my way up again, need a new DJ controller so will save some cash for that as well.

looks like you got some great advice and those speakers are pretty good.

If you can, save up some cash and get a subwoofer to handle the lows.

    Good luck with the biz

For temporary small start up I would go with the Mackie 15 inch Thumps for small gigs. They have enough low end to cover you for small gigs. I used them to start with and sold them when I grew. They have good resale value. I wish I would of kept them for monitor use.
