Hopefully Levels will be regarded in dance music a way akin to The Cheeky Song or Who Let The Dogs Out, i.e. for all the wrong reasons.

Unfortunately it's probably not even memorable or "funny" enough for that. I guess it'll just be forgotten in a few years time when the next mainstream trend comes around.

I suppose it's a good thing that I've never heard of Levels until now, then

Have a quick listen. Also there are some bullshitters remixing it such as Skrillex, on top of that we have our very own DJF members churning out hundreds of remixes of this crap.

I confirm; it's rubbish, like Mike Oldfieldesque pre-sets made even more beige. Come back Giorgio Moroder, all is forgiven!

I'd still be happier if a label at least made CDs instead of just releasing DLC digital all the time. They may not be pretty as vinyl but it's still a physical item and has a bit of "collectivity" there. I guess CDs lost a lot of their time in the DJ spotlight, seeing that they lasted less than vinyl before technology that surpassed them.

As a producer with some releases out, I'd say... yes! even from a personal standpoint on some of the music I make, I know that some of my less than optimal material would have no problem being released. Heck, the stuff I do have released is on like 5-6 compilations from the same label. While this might be 'good' for me (good is subjective since the money made is pennies), the ease of publishing digitally is indeed increasing the amount of crappy music being released imo. My goal is to have a release on vinyl, which I might end up paying for myself. I think with the ease of releasing digital music (financially), we are seeing more crappy music coming out that if labels had to invest in vinyl and paying for distribution. I took part in a remix comp where the comments on the original track were mostly "Is this a joke?!" (Interestingly, those kind of contests are the most attractive to me because I get more latitude in my creativity )

I actually started a thread about whether it's good to release tracks, just based on whether or not a label wants to pick them up. I was thinking it terms of my discography... Sometimes as a producer you don't always wait till you've perfected a track till you upload it to soundcloud, but even then labels want it sometimes. Then you have to make a decision... in the end I said f*ck it, whatever, but in short, yeah I hink MP3's allow for a lot more tracks that might not be worthy of release to get released.

In the end though, I don't think they fare any better if they are bad and released digitally, than if they had not been released at all

I guess the point I was making is that with the CD revolution and ability to digitally copy discs, the monetary value of both the music and the physical medium went right down the toilet.

that's what I wondered about; a lot of producers are now making tracks in a few hours, on a plane, in their cars ect, and uploading the same day. Perhaps the technology is so good now that tweaks over weeks/months are pointless, but I doubt it.
