I do pretty good on the mic. Spur of the moment stuff is my most fun. Last gig, as the groom was removing the garter (head under dress, removing with teeth) I noticed a young teenage boy sitting down, lined up almost perfectly to get a glimpse under the dress and he had the BIGGEST smile on his face. "I wonder why this young man has such a big smile on his face?" (boy turns beet red but smile gets even bigger and every body laughs) "Amazing... there seems to be a whole gaggle of young men in that general vicinity for some reason." (4 or 5 boys standing next to first boy join him turning red... more laughs)

Humor is an important part of what we do. It was 10 seconds of hilarity that helped maintain a fun, party like atmosphere. I don't think it was the highlight of the evening but an opportunity arose that was just too perfect to pass up.

What have been some of your favorites? What gags do you use often? What have been some of your funnier moments? I'm always looking for new material and ideas.

Hey guys,

I'm DJing a wedding in July in a barn, first time for me (in a barn, not DJing...)! I was wondering if anyone else has had experience in a similar setting, and if so what kind of PA they used. I was hoping to get away with an all active setup but I'm not too sure. It's not a big wedding, 100-150 people, and the music would be typical wedding, maybe some upbeat house at the end. Here's what the place looks like:

http://www.freewebs.com/themusicbarn...toid=112511141

Any advice on what kind of setup I should use?

cheers,
Bryan

Well as you guys may have seen my other thread asking for help on my first wedding gig I did for some friends, well here is how my set up looked. Any input is greatly apreciated. I made the facade 80" wide, enough to cover a 6' table. The party was a blast to do, played country mostly, but when the dancing came about, we went hard! For about the last hour I did request, and told them who ever requested a song had to dance to do it. Talk about laughs! It looked like everyone enjoyed that! Well anywho, thanks everyone for all the info you guy gave me on the other thread, it really helped out. I now have another gig booked for next May for a friend of a friend. I guess they were impressed by my work.

Lit up

Here i centered the lights on the joints

And the end result. I was on an decline but made it work. Yeah the speakers are behringers, but hopefully with enough gigs i can upgrade to some JBL's.

Galager's thread has sparked an interesting controversy. One that I've seen a lot of in the short time I've been involved with DJing. Mainly, whether or not you are a "real" DJ if you don't mix and or beat match your music.

Personally, I'm in the no mixing camp. (Or beat matching for that matter.) As an event DJ, I don't feel a need for it. Frankly, I don't think I've ever been to a wedding or company event where the DJ was wowing everybody with his/her mixing skills. As long as the flow of the music keeps people dancing and the DJ remembers to follow the itinerary, everybody goes home happy. Mixing just isn't a required skill here. Grandma just doesn't give a damn about some fool screwing up "Last Waltz" by mixing it with "Scream & Shout" by Will.I.Am.

Parties are a gray area. Mixing and beat matching are far more appreciated in this area but still not always required. For 90% of the parties around here, I could slap on the Deluxe Set of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Greatest Hits and have 20 drunks telling me, "You are the greatest f'ing DJ ever, dude! WWWWWOOOOOOOO!!!!! FREEBIRD!!"

OK, that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but you get my point.

Now if you're going to be playing in clubs, then you'd better know your shit when it comes to mixing, beat matching, scratching and all the other little tricks. This is where it becomes important. This is when people REALLY want to hear some wild new shit. If you play the full 6 minutes of "Harlem Shake" unmixed, you're likely to get chased out of the club. Or at the very least, have a beer bottle thrown at you along with chants of, "YOU SUCK!!"

This is one of the two reasons I don't play clubs. (The other is because my insurance won't cover me if I play bars/clubs) I know my mixing and beat matching are crap and I wouldn't dream of attempting it in front of a live crowd. Give me an afternoon with a few tracks and Audacity and I can cut and paste some wicked shit together. I wouldn't even think about trying to do it on the fly though.

To me, you're a "real" DJ if you go out and get the job you were paid to do done. If you can't mix/beat match, don't take those gigs. It's really that simple.

Are you a member of your local Chamber of Commerce & if so, has it helped you? Have the other members called you because your a fellow member? I do...

Are you a member of your local Chamber of Commerce & if so, has it helped you? Have the other members called you because your a fellow member? I do know that as a group, they patronize only members when they can. For example, their luncheon/meetings are always held at a restaurant/cafe/diner of which is a member. But, do they have the need for a DJ for other activities such as Christmas parties or banquets otherwise? Or, do the members really follow protocol & search for a DJ that is a member when they need one for personal use like a wedding or birthday party etc?

To explain my question further, I do not have an interest in participating in the Chamber activities so, its not that they will know me from social functions etc or chamber activities, so the question is, do they really search member data base when they need a photographer, caterer or DJ even if they aren't aware that one exists as a member?

So, back to the question, are you a member of your local chamber & has it helped you?

So I'm opening this thread to discuss about referring business to other DJs when you're booked and how you screen those guys... and if they actually return the favor.

BUT... I'm really just in need of someone who I can trust to pick up a Bucks County gig on 8/17... The guys I normally refer to are all booked. And this is for the sister of a previous client, and I NEED to refer her to a competent DJ who will kill it like I would. (But not quite as good, so they come back to me in the future... ;) This bride was not going to hire a DJ but the sister and mother are buying the DJ as a wedding gift because we did a great job... So they are going to want a fair price, but you don't have to low ball... I'd guess to say they want about a $1000 DJ. It's in an unconditioned barn (with power)... I normally would be leery of taking this type of gig but because this is a previous client I would hook them up... PM me if interested.

The reception center I work at part time came to me with the requested songs the B&G want to hear this weekend. Rap, rap, some R&B, and more rap. What don't I listen to? Rap and very little R&B. It is too late to back out, it is this weekend. In the Pacific North West where I live there usually is very little call for that and when there is I don't accept the gig. Can't do that here.

Fortunatly my oldest daughter listens to this 'music' (damn I feel old) and she has agreed to help me out by telling me what to download, etc. but I don't have radio edits of this stuff so I don't know what I am going to do.

If you have suggestions, I am all ears. If you have suggestions of wedding appropriate rap music I REALLY want to hear from you.

Don't judge me! I am not some noob to these forums. :teef: I know how much people dislike noobs that ask "What should I play at a wedding?". This time is different in the fact that I can't have profanity or other highly offensive language in the songs or songs about breaking up or cheating on your significant other. I haven't found a prior posting for that. Help a fellow DJ in a bind. Thank you.

I posted the suggestion about a year ago, about the possibility of a Forum Subsection dedicated to Gig Logs to be created under the Mobile Section, but I was shot down, and told to just post them in the Mobile Section. I notice more and more Gig Logs being posted, and shared, and a member (or maybe more than 1) don't like them in the Mobile Section, so I am just throwing this out to the Forum Administration, that maybe we should look into creating a new subsection just for GigLogs. It will help keep the Mobile Section itself more as a Q&A area, and may keep some users who troll the Mobile section happy, because they would no longer have to read or view successful gigs, while they are sitting at home on a Saturday not working.

COUNTRY,

That more do I have to say LOL. OK Wedding one here not sure where to post but sure hope someone can help out.

They have requested a lot of Country to be played as well as top 40 in the dance section of the reception. Background music is soft stuff LIKE:

Zac Brown Band, Brad Paisley, Lee Kernaghan, Adam Brand, Beccy Cole, McAlister Kemp, Taylor Swift, Wolverines, Shania Twain, Melinda Schnider, Keith Urban, Garth Brooks, Brooks & Dunn Reba Mcentire Allan Jackson.

Slot are Aussie artists BUT still what are the hits form these artists so I have a decent playlist to build. Iam desperately trying to listen to everything but I have about 3500 country hits and I am afraid I wont hear and process them all before the weekend. I am trying to go through the hits but its not easy. Any country boffins out there I would appreciate you assistance.

Cheers

OP

NOT SURE WHERE TO POST SO WILL PUT HERE AND under other music
