Dj Angelo and Reloop made a cool vid recently...

I wholeheartedly believe that this "augmented turntablism" is the future of the DMC. What say you?

This fuses turntablism and controllerism and looks pretty damn good.

Those American Audio HTD 4.5s look pretty good.

Now see, THAT is a performance! Granted, it's more live-remixing than DJing, but there's no doubt that a high level of skill is required to do it.

IMHO, THAT is the direction that controllerism is and should be headed... not stiching together sonic tapestries via Ableton Live. Think Enferno (http://www.djenferno.com/?page_id=151)as opposed to Girl Talk (http://illegal-art.net/girltalk/).

As for DMC embracing this, I don't see that happening. I think another competition will be needed. DMC stresses turntablism above all else.

Yeah, I just don't see any way for straight vinyl DJs to stand up to this kind of routine in competition (with equal skill sets ofc)

I think it makes the DMCs too hard to judge.

DMC with 2 turntables and a mixer is kinda like saying "who is the best football player?". DMC with all kinds of equipment allowed is like saying "who is the best sportsman?" and how would you say if the best cricketer is better or worse then the best football player?

Hopefully you know what I'm getting at.

I think technically speaking, this routine is much better than that Angelo one, as an illustration of what can be done with just 2 decks and a mixer: -

The kids growing up today will not see the difference. In fifteen years this will be "turntablism"

I already consider it "augmented" turntablism.

Btw I love that Unkut routine :) imagine the potential if he even embraced some of this new technology, eh?

Also, this is only hard to judge if you aren't familiar with the techniques (just like traditional turntablism). I feel I could competently judge this against another "augmented" routine.

About the sportsman thing, its really more like judging old-school football against the new kind that has scientifically designed helmets, pads, radio communication, and performance enhancing drugs. Yeah, you can't compare the two, BUT they are both football ;)

You're probably right, Phi. I suppose that as long as the boundaries are being pushed and new expressions discovered, no one should complain.

Still, no matter how cools the tools are, vision, motivation, and skills are the differentiators to me. Still, bring on the tools. I've got some 'spirimentation to do... bwahahahahaha

He has (watch some of his other YouTube vids), but I just don't think it's right for a competition like this.

unless, everyone has the same tracks and sample pack to choose from.

That was freaking amazing. Almost sounded fake, that's how tight that routine was. Geez.

When someone scratches on vinyl and someone else can sample that vinyl scratch and be judged equally, their is no longer a point. DMC should just hang it up as they are no longer relevant.

No kidding... on freakin' point. Also, liked the glitch hop vibe.

Yeah man, Unkut is so precise!

Here's another of his routines where he incorporates some other gear and uses a DVS. The juggle at the beginning is awesome: -

I dunno if you've seen this, but this is cool too: -

I love all that stuff, but I just don't think it's a good fit for the DMC.

Didn't the DMC recently allow DVS use? What are the current restrictions on that?

Sigma
06-28-2012, 11:54 AM
Yeah, they allow it. Not sure of the restrictions. In the DMC Online comp there's very few restrictions based on some of the videos I've seen.

+1

While I admire the innate skills of most DMC contestants, I just don't see the skills as being lucrative to develop.

I think the scratch community is going to keep doing its thing. There's definitely a place for that, imho. I'm hoping to see more stuff like Enferno. God, I love him. Every time I see him, I realize I really, really need to step my game up. He's the person who made me want to do this in the first place.
