For the same reason the CV horns sound the way they do, big driver, small rear chamber, small horn path, goes loud but sounds one tonal & boomy. The CV Horn, the B-52 horn, the Sonic horn & the rest of the clone horns all pretty much suffer from the same problem & feature the same characteristics. The cheapest factory horn loaded sub that I have heard that sounds really good is the JTR Growler, the cheapest horn loaded sub period that still sounded good was a DIY BFM Tuba 24. There are some good reflex subs on the market that sound good for cheap that would be a good choice if decent horn loaded subs are out of your budget & DIY is out of your skill level.

There's a reason that commercially built [C-V EL36 & Clones] folded horns (http://www.speakerplans.com/index.php?id=1850horn) that are loaded with 18s fall short: You can NOT put an 18 into a folded horn and expect wonders. C-V Le, AB, LX, Etc are one-note wonders, as are the B-52 and other companies' knock-offs.

Too much piston area and not enough horn to move the sound down. The damaged drivers coming outta those makes ya go WTF?! every time.
Even a 15" speaker is pushing the limits of many folded horns... What Bill Fitzmaurice does with his Tuba and Titan lines is nothing short of amazing for a DIY built subwoofer system.

Too broad of a statement there to be considered accurate since there are a number of 18" folded horns that actually do perform really well such as the Danely TH118 http://www.danleysoundlabs.com/pdf/TH%20118%20spec%20sheet.pdf or the JTR Orbit Shifter http://jtrspeakers.com/portable/orbit-shifter/ & are a number of others.

Nightro, check the link... I'm referring to that specific design of the EL36 and similar clones... Edited my original post to reflect that.

I had looked at the time, you had a link to speakerplans version of the same large driver, short horn path design however your statement was vague & broad at the time without distinction.

PS, glad someone is paying attention.

It's true that some 18 loaded horns are well engineered and work well enough. But they're few and far in between, and for the most part far larger and more expensive than the average DJ would consider. And they still can be equaled or beat by a well designed fifteen or even twelve loaded horn. For the most part they exist because buyers have it drilled into them that they have to have eighteens, and if the market exists there will always be a product to serve it.

Oh I see. So Is there any market horns that will Contain 12's or 15's. Or would Reflex Subwoofers be a better solution.

JTR Growler - 12" driver
Once you go horn loaded it's really hard to go back to front loaded reflex.

No argument there but a statement was made that classed ALL 18" horn loaded designs in the same trash bin & this simply isn't true.

You should choose the design you want to go with out of the two, commit to that design & sell off the other design. You're still learning so it makes no sense getting mixed up in the slippery slope of mix matching subs, you'll be better off all around just sticking with one design instead.

Thanks. My folded Horns have A large flaw as they only sound good when opened, i will make a video soon.

I was looking for those used before since I refused to pay more than $500-$600 for a pair. This was something I liked how they look. But it was next to impossible to find. That's when I decided to build a pair of your subs. :)
