Whatever floats THEIR boat.
for a new years party ay... well ive DJed for heaps of parties and dances, and wat i find is that you should play well known songs to start off with, get people on the dance floor and then hit it with your house and techno, then around mid night and the next moring play really old songs the drunk people can sing too. Hope this helps.

yeah have noticed that too. before whole crowd coems in u an play what u like then u start with songs that are known to the crowd and they like. after midnight u can start with techno and those stuff.

Don't forget to bring mix CDs of stuff you can't mix, means you can have a break and will cut down on "have you got anything good" comments.
Will there be other DJs? Time your set wisely, house is a good genre to hit midnight NYE. As it's your first party you might want to get on early, as later you could be too drunk.
When I play NYE, I'm thinking classic anthems, forget what's hot, play all the best

i dont know about other DJ's. Yeah might bring mix cd's too but i got into mixing good so i kno much of those stuff. also i dont know if it will be actual cdj's or a cd player so i am not sure if i have the oportunity of tempo and those stuff.
If it's a bar, get a lot of top 40 stuff, and adjust based on what type of bar. If it's a hilljack bar, sports bar, old farts bar, etc. There is no one answer that suits everything.

All Great ideas! A good thing is to find out who you might be playing for.....age, style, lifestyle......
Sounds like your limited on info for this round... Just means you have to bring more ammo! I'd treat it like a wedding recpt! You NEVER know who will be there so to make friends(people happy) Take all you got! And about 11pm start in with the the classics..... everything they know the words to....while dancing! Then save the best for last (with a kick or mix potential) for just after the ball drop, then settle into your intended set! JUST KEEP WITH THE FLOW!!!!!
You'll get requests all night and It's normal! and at the worst time!ALWAYs! So you just have to deal and stay on beat!
It sounds like your new to this, so I'll share what I think is the most important thing when DJing in front of people that you may not know.......That is you don't know them, and you represent the venue, and yourself. You never know who may be there. If your drunk, high, ect... it WILL represent the night! I've gotten countless "other" gigs from solo party's to large venues and it was due to myself being friendly and sober! Lots of potential money in the future...prob is you never know when or where... Make some contact cards...name , number... Just set them there at the booth. If they want them, they'll take um!
