I could write this up myself, but am not really familiar with some sub genres or fresh artists coming out now. So thought I would allow any members to contribute artists they feel should be under a specific sub genre. Or make a few changes.

Lets start off

Neuro / Neurofunk/ Tech Step

Techstep is characterized by a dark, sci-fi mood, near-exclusive use of synthesised or sampled sound sources, influences from industrial and techno music, and what some writers have described as a "clinical" sound. This then progressed in Neuro/Neurofunk by juxtaposed elements of heavier and harder forms of funk with multiple influences ranging from techno, house and jazz, distinguished by consecutive stabs over the bassline and razor-sharp backbeats.

Artists

Ed Rush and Optical
Phace
Teebee
Chook
Matrix (pre 2002)
Calyx
Audio
Skynet
Noisia

Labels

Subtitles
Virus

Hardstep
It is characterised by a gritty production style, that has an inner-city feel to it. The breaks are less cut-up sounding than oldschool jungle, and harder, hence the name hardstep. Techstep is hardstep's most popular subgenre.

Artist
Tech Itch
Current Value
Limewax
Zardonic
Noistek
Miss Redflower
Dylan
Panacea
Evol Intent

Labels
Freak
L/B
Tech Itch

Artists

Origin Unknown (pre 1999)
Photek

Labels

Atmospheric / Intelligent

Much more laid back than most other genres. Has rising pads and synths with chopped up drum pattens in some tracks

Seba & Lotek
Orange and Blue
JCB

Artists

D Bridge
ASC
Loxy
Resound
Genotype
Jubei
Bop

Labels

There are not really any minimal only labels but quite a few minimal tracks have been released on the following labels

Exit
Levitated
Metalheadz

Also perhaps embed a youtube video of one track for each sub genre, that captures what that sub genre is all about. Suggestions for that would also be appreciated.

Rep to all who contribute anything.

while it is rather hard to nail a description for jumpup, maybe add some newer artists to the category to help shape it more? Original sin is a great choice, but I feel like jumpup has shifted quite a bit since BCUK and Ram Trilogy stuff that it might be helpful to add some newer artists? maybe Sub Focus, Tantrum Desire,, J Majik/Wickaman, just to kinda help people get a more recent feel for the genre

as a description, maybe Characterized by harder, often midrange emphasized basses and leads with the drums featuring heavily on the kick and snare rather than the entire break?
just spitballin, but yeah :P

A lot of that isn't really "jump up" to me, I'd consider it more "dancefloor" kind of sounds. I think "Jump Up" is more DJ Hazard, Taxman, Sub Zero, Original Sin, etc.

Just listen to a DJ Hype mix. That = Jump Up.

to me, jumpup is just this energetic get on your feet/get moving kinda music, yeah sub focus/tantrum are more light than hazard but I'd still put em in the realm of jump up

Need some recommendations for some jump up labels. I have the obvious ones but could do with another 5 I reckon.

Now you see to me true "Jump up" was 1998 ish Joker Records, Prisoners of Technology, Aphrodite & Mickey Finn, Hype and Ganja Kru records...
Maybe an old/ new Jump up distinction

Jump up artists:

Hazard
Original Sin
Taxman
Sub Zero
Majistrate
Twisted Individual
Dillinja(sigh)

For Jump up:

Playaz
Ganja
Chronic
Low Down Deep Recordings
Cold Blooded Recordings
Grid

Personally I wouldn't consider Viper as a jump up label. They are more on the Epic DnB sound. They are like Hospice..err Hospital.

BTW, for Drum Funk
Dub One
Equinox
B-Key
Nolige

labels: Scientific Wax, Bassbin(RIP) Interspective

ASC hasn't made a drum funk tune in a while. He's on the minimal tip.

Minimal:

D Bridge
ASC
Loxy
Resound
Genotype

Keep in mind, for the minimal sound, there aren't labels that are strictly minimal. Anyways, labels: Exit, Levitated, Metalheadz(sometimes)

Thank you deinfamous! Will spread some rep around!

Still need some more neuro labels, perhaps I will add ammunition recordings for good measure.

Personally, I think they are more on the Hardstep level. I mean every now and then one of those labels will bust out a chinstroker tune, but yeah thats every now n then. Drum n bass is confusing!!

Rep to OP. I've started to come into DNB and have been drawn to the chiller Liquid and Ambient/Intelligent areas of it. Thank you for letting me know what to call it. Now I know what to look for.

What would some of the more breakbeat-ish stuff fall into? What I mean is tracks like

Man, this is quite the undertaking ... I have a real tough time categorizing my records because labels and artists are generally quite diverse! but a few thoughts ...

Drumfunk artist: Macc, Fanu

Drumfunk labels: lightless

Re:Jumpup -- that term used to mean the old school aphro-style wobble like oooold zinc, hype, hybridz, etc. How to distinguish that from 'modern' jump up like hazard & taxman?

Neuro Aritists: Xilent, phetsta, phobia, loadstar, rido
Neuro labels: If you're going to list those artists, you gotta add the likes of underfire, vision, no u-turn .... right?

Where would dsc14 fit? Neuro-ish i guess? Kemal & Rob Data?

Hardstep labels: mute:8, hard leaders

It's practically two-step intelligent dancefloor neuro :P
