Hey everyone, welcome back to DJF!

I have a huge oppurtunity coming up in 1 and a half weeks! I get to play at a local youth conference, it takes place over the weekend and we are ecpected to have at least 2000 people going! I get to dj for roughly 30 minutes before and after each session (when a band plays or a speaker talks). I have never played on a system this huge and am looking foward to it. I feel quite prepared, I have played at the biggest youth group in canada every week for the last 1 and a half years but this is a little diffrent. Any one have any tips for an event of this size?

If you're buying your tracks then it shouldn't even be a thought that crosses your mind - that if your tracks will hold up.

Dont try to impress people with quick mixing or anything youre not very confident with. Club mixes have intro's and outros for a reason.
avoid the red and given your previous experience, you probably already know to play appropriate tracks/versions (clean)

take a dump before the gigThese are good. Also burn your CDs (or equivalent) well in advance.

since when is 320 high quality?
if you're playing on a HUGE system I hope you're running .wav at 44100 and you fully understand how to get your levels proper before you enter your mix.

Unless you're playing to all 6 billion people on earth, 320k is enough

But yes. Levels should be checked thoroughly

+1 320k is enough. My field of study is audio production, etc.

Yea 320k is fine...hell 256k will be ok... I've even played a few 128k files through big systems...its not the best but its not utterly horrible either.

The one thing I would suggest you do is make sure the sound company provides you with a monitor speaker. Usually when you are dealing with systems that big that means you will probably be on a stage behind the rig which means you won't hear any high freq. Even if you are in front of the speakers, the processing delay plus the time it takes sound to get from the speakers back to you can really throw off your mixing.

Also don't expect to move the crowd and rock them...if this is during some kind of meeting, then you are basically background music as people come in and out of the room. So they will probably be more interested in getting to the bathrooms and chatting up friends than rocking out to your music. So I would say treat it like you would an opening set for a club. Just kind of chill and look for more subtle reactions like toe tapping and head bobbing.

I certainly buy my tracks now, those illegal methods dont have the same qulaity.
All my music has been carefully picked (Most don't have any vocals just to be super safe)

I havent used monitors before but I know they wil have those there!
And I am happy that I am the "background" music, keeps a little pressure off.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone I feel good about this!

Be ready (JUST IN CASE) for anyone that would walk up to you and ask you for your contact info if they want to hire you or something too!

+1

I finally made a small investment in 500 business cards...there's nothing more frustrating than having someone ask for a business card, and you don't have one.

Business cards are dirt cheap nowadays. Just get em.

If you're taking your own tables/controller ensure you have all the cords you'll need before hand. DOUBLE CHECK before you leave... then check again. Get there early, do a proper connect and sound check wayyyy before anybody arrives. Have fun :)

Good luck man! I do better djing in front of people honestly. Their energy hypes me up and keeps my internal metronome on point :)
