That's quite a compelling argument, I am utterly convinced.

it depends how you see trance, and how you understand it's development.
For me around the end of the 90's the main genre took a departure in to a more commercial direction, while the subgenres went in different directions.
Todays more popular trance IMHO doesnt have that much in common to the stuff in the mi 90's, yes it is still energetic but it is not so hypnotic and depedns a lot on long breaks and over the top build ups, also a lot of vocals.
But when you look at sybgenres like psy progr trance, dark psy, even progressive tyhere is still a lot of the old ethos there.
SO basically there is Mctrance, easy to consume and trance for the crazy people outhere which like long parties, long festivals and getting lost in to music.
Of course this is all my opinion.

Depends what you're referring to in saying "trance."
There's still plenty of great high-bpm trance out there that isn't underground, and there is plenty of amazing underground trance and progressive trance.
However, what Above & Beyond, Sander van Doorn, Cosmic Gate, Armin van Buuren and all of the other "trance giants" are playing these days is commercial as fuck. Big saw electro basslines, cheesy leads and fluffy vocals. It's pure crap compared to what trance used to be. It's funny because years ago I regarded all of these DJs as gods. Oh how quickly they sell out...

All of you need to grow up. Like everything in life, if you don't evolve, you die. The 'trance' sound has changed enormously since the 90's and even early 2K's and all of the 'trance gods' (if you will) have had to change their sounds to fit where the direction of dance music is going. A&B, Armin, Cosmic Gate, Gareth Emery, John O'Callaghan, Alex M.O.R.P.H, Kyau & Albert, Super8 & Tab, Gabriel & Dresden, Matt Darey and even newbies like Ben Gold and Norin & Rad are still making beautiful sounding tracks (at least from what my ears can tell). Stop being stuck in the days when dance music wasn't the 'cool thing to be into'. Just because it's getting bigger doesn't mean that everyone is selling out, just means they're trying to keep making a living doing what they love.
