They're both popular.

Mixing is the same, they both use 32 bar phrases and the same breakdown-buildup-drop format.

I would suggest you spend some time going to parties to find out.

Any genre is popular when it is played where you have a crowd that's into it. For most of the venues i play at dubstep tend to clear the floor if it's not timed right.

This is closer to live production. He's using samples as well as making melodies live and recording them and playing them back in loops.

btw, it's not dubstep.

I just posted this in the Mix Submission section, but it should give you an idea of one way of mixing dubstep.

if you are into the more popular stuff, listen to the flux pavillion essential mix on BBC Radio 1.

Personally, I say do not worry about what is popular and what people play at parties because to me that takes away some of the fun. I say listen to some house and dub step and just play what you like. If you play what you like and you're good at what you do people will notice and enjoy not only you the dj but the music and that would intern turn into a pretty good party [:

Drop a dubstep tune in at the wrong time and it can literally clear a dancefloor instantly. I tend to play some bouncy dubstep (fullham to waterloo), then a bit of 2 step, then drop to some bad man bass driven tune (v.i.v.e.k. - soundman). Wash rinse repeat. Dubstep to me can get quite boring after a while, so i like to keep changing the mood and keep the people on their toes as to whats coming next. Plus it would be too easy to mix an hour of dubstep stuff that all sounds similar.

so i know this hedges on cross pollination, forum-wise, but for OPs sake,

im just getting into mixing, and dubstep is my genre of choice. all of my mixes are 140, so it might give you a decent idea of what it COULD sound like, if you wanted it to

Tunes like this are ideal for mixing it up a little whilst keeping at 140
