Hi, I'm getting into lighting and I'm thinking, how do some of you mount your lights as the title suggests? Im thinking of just using a regular speaker stand and mount the spot light above it. are there any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I often use my scanners or moving heads to spot the cake if I can. This way, I do not have to setup additional equipment and reuse what I already have set up.

As for what I use, I keep my scanners on trees and my moving heads on trusses.

Yup, moving heads are great for highlighting the cake table.

Program a scene on the table after you have everything setup and you're set.

sweet. Lets hope that they keep the cake close to my set-up.

If your scanner or moving head fixture allows for replacement gobos, you can always carry a couple of aperture gobos which will allow you to size the diameter of your beam at various distances.

This might work OK if it's really dark in the venue, but if it's lit up like it usually is during dinner, I don't think you're going to be able to enough light to really "highlight" the table.

On the cheap, a pair of LED Pin Spot 2s work well from both sides of the room. Requires more setup/tear down time for it though. If you are close, you can also throw a single one up on your light stand and aim it at the cake. Scanners or moving heads would be a lot more desirable though if you have them or the money to buy them.

The Chauvet LFS-5 (http://www.proaudiostar.com/chauvet-lfs-5.html?gdftrk=gdfV21380_a_7c627_a_7c5539_a_7cCHA_d _LFS5&gclid=CJCD5O_VoLACFQaxnQodezxmYQ#buy) is perfect for what you want to do. Its very small and has great light output. I was very impressed with them at LDI. Its has all the features of a full leko just in a very compact body and it uses an LED light source so it won't heat up the cake. The only downside is that it is expensive at $300. You can get a full sized regular leko for that...

I would suggest getting whatever you are using higher than a standard speaker stand.
