View Full Version : First Annual Producer Battle: RULES AND ROLL CALL! ;D
Hygro
05-20-2012, 07:38 PM
Ladies, gentlemen, and Daft Punk robot producers. After aggregating the very different opinions, I present a fair option that puts us all in the same format while allowing maximum flexibility of style.
The competition starts Saturday, May 26. It Ends Saturday's midnight (aka Sunday) on your local time, on June 16.
The rules:
This Saturday we will get the acappella. It might be short, might be long, but it must be recognizably present in the track even if it's barely used.
**Any genre**, but must fit a pop format. With some customization, that's intro-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-specialmoment-doublechorus-outtro. About 3:20 long. Pop formats have 16 bar phrases, though as dance music uses 32 bar phrases, you obviously have flexibility to give it a 32 bar feel. Additionally, there are dance tracks that use pop formats (daft punk did almost exclusively in Homework) whose verses and choruses alternative buildup-breakdown so that it feels dancey. So again, Pop format, but within that structure, you have total flexibility. :)
The ranking will be done in brackets, according to a 3 part score, 1 to 5 with 1 being suck and 5 being pro. Quality of production, mixdown, mastering. Adherence to rules/format. Vibe, creativity, just how much you like the track, freeform vote.
Also you will cast a holistic vote on the forum voting software which serves as a tie breaker.[5]Submissions will go through the battle forum--I'll make that part easy for yah.
One entry per person
Roll call!
edit: Not pop genre! just structure! any BPM/style/sound!
edit two: one entry per player
edit three: all site members are allowed and encouraged to rank the battle mixes--except your own battle
edit four:
here is accapella  it has no words. Accapella must be recognizable, but can be chopped up, sampled, effected, and as short as you want. But again, it must be recognizable or people will give you a low/zero score on following rules
http://soundcloud.com/huckthig/flipflapjack-v2-2trx Because it's freeform and genre free, you could still pull in your own vocals separate of this.

I'm down. What's with the pop structure only though?
A) it's in lieu of a single genre requirement, which was popular but not universal
B) it's in lieu of a sample pack, which was popular but not universal
C) it keeps submissions short
D) it makes it difficult to not start over with a new track, since few of us make any pop-format tracks to begin with.
E) tying into A and B, it keeps us all kind of on the same page, even with big and awesome creative differences. That's what the genre or sample pack was for.

Im game.. When you say pop format tho, I assume your just talking about the structure, and not a specific BPM range or genre?

Exactly. No pop genre requirements or bullshit like that. Any BPM. You can make gabbercore-meets-ambient-orchestral at 220 BPM. Just keep the structure :)

Let's not use being gay as a pejorative here, but yeah, feel free to minimize the accapella's presence. I probably will. Still choosing the acapella.
Im Down (: Any of our own samples and VST's are ok correct?
Yeah, if you wanna pull vengeance samples or apple loops or similar thats fine (not sure why you would) and of course VSTs are fine. Audio Units, as us Logic users call em.

Who is ranking/judging the comp out of interest?
All of us. We're DJs, so we all know music. ;D
So for example, lets say 10 people submit once it all comes to it. 5 1v1 matches for the first round, and everyone who shows up and bothers and ranks is how it's decided. Proper etiquette would suggest that we all honestly rank everyone's mix in the battles we aren't a part of, to ensure sufficient votes. In total it would take less time that listening to a DJ mix battle, since each song is 3ish minutes.

ah, i did have some spare time within the past couple of weeks; could be fun -but then, there was no way i'd fit within the rules since i just cannot create anything shorter than 6-7 minutes :P

I thought a bar was 4 beats and EDM phrases were 32 beats (8 bars at 4:4). Or am I confused?
Can I hear the accapella before committing to the challenge?

32 bar phrases are made of four 8 bars. 16 bar phrases are made of four 4 bars.
Technically speaking house and trance music are in 8/4 time, and techno is in 2/4. No producer realizes this while plugging away in the 4/4 setting on their DAW. Pop is in 4/4.
The accapella itself shouldn't matter but do what you want.

You only have to use what makes it recognizable. That means just one note, as long as it's clear and fits appropriately and obviously into the track. You could do some creative effects and stuff to it.

Well, you'll likely lose points on one of the 3 categories but thats up to each listener  if its worth it its worth it.' I would probably judge on how well you kept the format even with the extended minute. A lot of pop songs today reach 4 minutes because they add instrumental drops after each chorus before the verse. But the other point is to keep judging from being daunting.
The first thing to cut in a radio version of a song is the DJ-friendly intro and outtro, keep them 16 beats is 8 seconds on a house track, instead of a minute long 128

yah, it's a pain. Pretty much the track should just start with the inst playing, instead of building them up, like you normally would.
I'm currently working on the first 16bar intro; tweaking to see what sounds best, without everything playing at once.
Hygro

I'm stuck between a few ideas. It's a hard sample file to work with! One of my ideas is coming together really clean, but I feel like it's a solid 2nd place kind of track. Like it could not win, but those who like it will really like it. My other idea isn't far along but I'm not sure how to include the sample yet. Uncharted territory for me.
Hygro
06-06-2012, 12:35 AM
I'm getting feedback that some of you are having trouble with the sample.
We all are. That's kind of the point. ;) Worst case, just make a track, and throw a bit of the guy in there for good measure. That's damn near what I'm doing and I picked it. Treat it like a water mark on a photo :P. Pop formats sometimes sound awkward if you don't start with a fill before the first downbeat. Use his voice as the fill and then ignore it for the rest of the song. It doesn't really matter. Do your own thing and get it done :D
