View Full Version : House Classics
If the poll results aren't deceiving me we have got a good number of classic house heads (woo!). This thread is for all the classics! The stuff that takes you back to the good ol' days (or the days before you were born). I understand time moves on, soooo.... let's say it has to be at least 15 years old. (Anything 1997 or earlier)
Try to keep the video embeds to a minimum per post as well (unlike mine here) so we don't crash anyone's browser.
I'll start with the obligatory:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOLE1YE_oFQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAR8cq5Bl94
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUeMFG4wjJw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFuujExs03A
As opposed to the rest of the board, I will allow disco, italo, and (new york) garage classics in this thread for historic reasons. :)

z-ktkevlbVo'm surprised to see your suitcase at the door
Remember the good times, don't you want some more?
It's not a perfect love but I'll defend it
'Cause I believe that's what God intended
We got love too good to throw away
It's not over between you and me
It's not over don't want to be free
What has been joined by God, by God
Let no man put asunder
Oh no, don't throw it away
Don't throw it away
I can't hear those words spoken, understood
Making bonds through love, the times are better good
I'm convinced that what is meant to be will be
Even the stars declare that you belong to me
We got love too good to throw away
It's not over between you and me
It's not over don't want to be free
What has been joined by God, by God
Let no man put asunder
Oops sorry, I missed that bit
All good mate, top stuff! :D

Hmm I just came across an original from 1999 that should probably be on the list. I'll wait for any ok from you NPC before posting... basically DJ Dan - That Zipper Track .. I think that's a classic that should be on the list.
As for tracks that make it to this list, I'm on the search to add to this :)

Great minds think alike, was going to post Lil Louis blackout (same track basically with added biblical proclaiming, still quality) didn't in the end because so much of his stuff back then blurred the boundaries between house and techno, Video Clash is a prime example.

"Garden of love" was '99 and "Can't get enough" was '98. I'm going to let it slide, becuase well... "can't get enough" is pretty damn close to '97 (and hey, it really is a classic by now), and the "garden of love" is a Joey negro track. I like Joey Negro.
But keep track of your release dates people, you'll make us all feel old otherwise. :argh:

Proto house is short for prototype house, meaning something that is too electronic to be called disco, but made before the term house was coined. Basically house sounding music from 80-85:ish. Klein an MBO are a perfect example of that. The boundaries between proto house and garage aren't super distinct. This list on Discogs shows post disco/proto house/garage, that sort of melt into each other: http://www.discogs.com/lists/Post-DiscoProto-HouseGarage/13595
Candido was a disco band that was influential to the early house producers, you can especially hear the "house piano" in a lot of their songs:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNg8Ch-hVH0
Another fine example of proto house is this. The vocals are a little avantgarde and would not really fit the definition of house music, but the instrumental is as housey as it got in 1983 when if first came out:

Isn't "classic" a relative term? Sort of how like the oldies station I grew up with played 50s and 60s music and now the same oldies station plays shit from the 80s? Starlight is a classic track (as in a 10 year old track that exemplifies the essence of house) in one sense but I guess not really the intent you guys had. LOL.

It is a relative term if you don't define it. However in the first post in this thread the definition is:
"If the poll results aren't deceiving me we have got a good number of classic house heads (woo!). This thread is for all the classics! The stuff that takes you back to the good ol' days (or the days before you were born). I understand time moves on, soooo.... let's say it has to be at least 15 years old. (Anything 1997 or earlier)

One of my absolute, hands-down, all-time favourite club tracks was "Good Life." Absolutely beautiful.
998P6HEzCdI
"Big Fun" was quite good too...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omfiVkkJ1OU
(On a related note, I was absolutely thrilled to recently learn that Kevin Saunderson and Paris Grey reunited last year to release the first new Inner City single since 1996. It's called "Future" and it's phenomenal - with remixes by MK, Carl Craig, and more!)

Here's another one that I was shocked hadn't been mentioned yet (that I could see):
rSzpOUwiLkc
I remember the first time that I heard "Push the Feeling On," on a Powerhouse remix issue back in 1993 (I think!). I was annoyed by how repetitive the mix was at first... then found out how incredibly addictive it was. I soon loved the track, and still do. I'll probably have this stuck in my head all day today, and I won't mind.
It's my understanding from the YouTube comments that Pitbull sampled this one within the last few years... and luckily, somehow, I completely managed to miss his track with the Nightcrawlers sample. :)

I'm also quite stunned to not see Robin S mentioned yet. Yes, she was more on the commercial side of house music, but her songs were great.
Although "Show Me Love" was her biggest hit, I actually preferred "Love for Love" (or, as it's spelled on some releases, "Luv 4 Luv").
This one reminds me of some of the more relaxing times back in my old college days, lounging around my dorm room in 1993 with my girlfriend at the time. Sure, she was an unfaithful, mentally-diseased loser who (I didn't realize at the time!) was engaged to some other guy for the duration of our relationship... but this track was still the bomb! :D

The first time I heard Kraze's "The Party," it was being spun by popular club DJ Sanchez (Michael Sanchez) and the late JD on KTOW progressive radio's "Party Train" program one weekend night in 1988 or 1989. I absolutely love the piano riff in this one.
The "Party Train" was revolutionary for the Tulsa area; it was the first program that I can remember presenting listeners with the tracks that were genuinely playing in the progressive and house clubs. KTOW itself was an astounding experiment in radio; from 1988 until the unfortunate end of their "progressive" era in early 1991, they allowed the DJs TONS of freedom to play whatever they wished, without being pushed around by corporate entities.
That was an amazing era, and Tulsa will never again experience anything quite like it.
UxQQ04kN6M4
Incidentally, two decades after KTOW's progressive heyday, I became friends with Sanchez via Facebook, and I was finally able to meet him in person at the "SRO25" reunion party in November 2010. He'd flown in from California as a guest DJ, and we talked for a long time about KTOW and music in general. If you're really bored and want to read extensive details about it, feel free to click here (http://www.djbadger.com/badgerjournal149.htm).

"Ride on Time" was another one that was played often on KTOW's "Party Train," and also featured a spectacular piano riff:
4lOb799cTxM
Of course, it ended up that the girl in the videos and on the record covers, "Katrin," was really just a model hired to lip-sync for Black Box. The vocals were sampled from Loleatta Holloway's "Love Sensation," and Black Box got in a bit of trouble regarding issues with proper sample clearance.
:badger:
Badger
03-18-2012, 01:01 PM
And, here's yet another that I first heard on the "Party Train" way back in the day. Coldcut's "People Hold On" not only had yet another undeniable piano groove, but it also featured the vocals of Lisa Stansfield shortly before she hit it big with her own single, "All Around the World."

Since I've already mentioned Coldcut, I really should throw in "Doctorin' the House" as well. Interestingly, guest vocalist Yazz only sings the chorus; instead of verses, the track just slings an assortment of (by this point) old-school samples at you. It's a lot of fun.

Dennis comes up with the goods as always. Too bad Nu Groove went belly up, it was a cool label.
Here's a Strictly that's been a little forgotten, but it still rocks :D

In actuality,it's Pre-disco.It goes back to the days of street jams, and yes,it has spilled into the club scene,as a "Classic".excellent song, great post.:tup:Bumpyjonas this one, is for you.:D clwd4hSHSjM
