I'm looking at a 6 channel mixer and it's input is 6 1/4 unbalanced plug. I want to plug my iPod an a cd player to it.

This is how it look

My question is from iPod to mixer. Do I get a splitter that's splits the channel from left and right and plug each side to a 1/4 mono?

So the splitter

Have a RCA cable that plugs to a RCA to a 1/4 mono plug

That will plug into the mixer. I would need 2 of this configuration. One for left and the other for right correct? I know there are cables made for this but I wanted to show the difference to better explain my question.

I think I understand it but then I see this

And wonder if it would work? So I would only use 1 channel on the mixer for both left and right channel from the iPod. But I'm thinking it's not correct to use with the 1/4 unbalanced input into the mixer

Please clarify for me. I've read articles but gets into the circuitry and makes it more confusing. I just want to know if the wiring that I described is actually correct.

Thanks

It depends...whats the mixer's brand and model...then we can tell you for sure what you need.

You see 1/4" cable can be two things.

1 - Mono Balanced Cable

2 - Stereo Un-Balanced Cable

So it all depends on what the mixer input is. If its a stereo input on each channel, then you would want a stereo 1/8" to stereo 1/4" cable/adapter

If it is looking for a mono input on each line then you would need a splitter cable. I would try to use as few adapters as possible. If you are in no rush order a 1/8" to 2 1/4" cable. The less adapters you have in the chain, the fewer places you can have a failure.

althought that will probably work. you can probably buy the exact cable you'd need without all the adapters:

I just used the different pieces to show my thought process and hopefully made it easier to explain at every connection

Thanks

So that particular mixer is looking for a mono input on each channel. So you would want to get a 1/8"M -> 2x 1/4" M cable. What you have depicted will work as well. You should be able to find this stuff any place that sells a fair amount of audio stuff...Radio shack, Best Buy, maybe even Walmart or Target...One of the best places to buy cables though is http://www.monoprice.com/

Have you bought the mixer yet?
What's your budget on the mixer?
Personally, from the iPod, I would find an adapter that plugs into the dock connector. It is far better than the 1/8" headphone out.
Also, personally, I would get a DJ style mixer with RCA inputs and use a standard RCA cable to connect the CD player and get the iPod dock to RCA connectors adapter to connect the iPod.

No I haven't gotten it yet. I choose this type of mixer because it's going to be used by a friends aerobics class. And I want io be a simple as possible for her to use. Especially cause there will be different people who will use it that aren't may not be as tech savvy. I was looking at the notepad for example and as cool as it is. It would be to complicated for them to use and get confusing.

Well then you should consider getting this (http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/CD200i/) for her. It will play all sorts of CDs, has an I-Pod dock and will accept an 1/8" input as well. This will give you lots of options and keep it simple.

You'll need to split the 1/8" stereo signal from the iPod and CD players each into two male 1/4" mono (unbalanced) cables.

To do so easily, get two of these:

* 1/8" stereo male to 1/4" TS female plugs:

* 2x 1/4" TS male to 2s 1/4" TS male cables:

get one of the dock adapters above and 4 of the bottom adapters.

Your two devices will occupy 4 channels out of the six on the mixer and give you a single mono output. For the output use either a standard mic/xlr cable, or a balanced trs (3 conductor 1/4") cable depending on your needs.

And for the record, I'm not really recommending Nady because they pretty much suck, but if that's what you're going with, this is IMO the best way.
