Canada's great eh! In all seriousness, it's good. Cost of living mainly depends on which province you live in (British Columbia and Ontario maybe one of the highest cost of living provinces) Here in Manitoba, cost of living is pretty low compared to the previous two i've stated. Montreal? I'm not too sure, I'm thinking cost of living is relatively high. PLUS WE GOTS POUTINE YO.

Montreal is good, if you don't speak french you will struggle to find work here. It's not impossible there are many people living here who are unilingual, but being bilingual significantly improved your chances.
I've been here for 4 years now, I knew no french when I moved and now I speak it pretty fluently. It really is up to you to learn the language, and think of it as an asset.

In the past 4 years I have fallen absolutely in love with the city. The nightlife is great, amazing party people. You have to have an open mind if you move here, and be relatively leftist. The Quebec province is the most "socialist" of the Canadian provinces from what I can see. We pay the highest taxes, but you also get some decent services.
You can think of mtl as the Europe of North America. Having lived in England before, montreal doesn't come close to "real" Europe, but having also traveled to other North American cities very frequently, montreal is far from them.
Anyways, shoot away what you'd like to know and I'll be happy to answer.

Oh and most importantly.... French Canadian chicks  [/thread]

Don't move to Ontario. The cost of living has inflated a lot and they tax the crap out of you.

Canada is boss. Love it here.

Vancouver is the highest cost of living city in the world now...BC is phenomenal though. Doesn't get too cold either depending on where you are.

MTL is a sick place to go, great nightlife, but speaking french will definitely help you get a job. that being said, everyone speaks english there.

Tdot is dope. A million things to do, different districts to hang out in like most large cities. Cost of living is also pretty damn high, but it drops once u start heading outta the city. Lots of nice places to live in the GTA (greater-toronto area) and the GO train will get you downtown from wherever.

If you do ever visit let me know and I'll be happy to show you around.
One other factor to remember about montreal is its proximity to New York for whenever you decide you miss the states :P

Don't go to Toronto, full of fake people concentrated on/caring about nothing but money :)

lol... I beg to differ.

Montreal has girls... but Quebec as a province is made up of a bunch of racists.

Toronto is where its at. EVERYTHING.... don't get me wrong the other provinces have their up sides but Toronto has everything you could want when it comes to djing and life in general. Multiculturalism coming out of our asses. From food to music to various events. Wanna know where your favorite dj or artist is going to spin or perform at first... Toronto. Where will you find the best DJ's in Canada? Toronto!....

This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Umm I have no reason to root for any of the two cities. I've only been in Canada for 4 years, I travel to Toronto 2 times a month but I am based in Montreal. The "racist" thing about the quebecers is a myth. If you go to them with that attitude, they'll treat you like that. If you go to them with a friendly attitude they are the friendliest of people.

Toronto on the other hand.. every community is racist against the other ones. Arabs against Indians against Persians against Blacks against Asians and so on...
What Toronto has going for it is good policies, the government of Ontario has a head on its shoulders, and the Federal government has helped them a lot in the past (such as cutting Montreal's International Film Festival's funding to give it to Toronto, which is why it is now such a huge festival).
I like Toronto, but in Montreal you get a better balance between work and fun :) In Toronto, it's all work.

I've been in Ottawa my whole life, leaving for Toronto in September because I feel its Canada's (at least Ontario's) hub for everything.

Montreal is real nice, but if you don't speak french, you got a major disadvantage.

Ottawa is the capital so its a government city, theres a huge push for bilingualism here; once again, if you don't speak french you're at a huge disadvantage.

This is VERYTrue. The Racism isn't blatant and obvious, but is there, and very vivid.

You do realize that every year Toronto accepts over 100K new immigrants and is expected to double it's population in the next ten years. Ofcourse there's going to be racism when you have new immigrant groups from, usually, conservative religious countries, such as Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.

If you talk to 2nd generation canadians from almost any background, they're not really racist...sure there might be that one black friend who jokes about white ppl not being able to jump, or ppl may talk about asian ppl being bad drivers, but I don't think it's nearly to a degree where someone would get beat up, killed or treated poorly because they were a particular race.

P.S. my favourite province is Alberta. Try hitting up Calgary or Edmonton, both nice cities. If you really want a music scene, I would suggest Toronto or Montreal. Vancouver is naturally nice, but then again if racism is such a huge issue...they have the worst gang violence/ crimes in the country. on a per capita basis Toronto is safer than both Vancouver and Montreal.

The "racist" thing about the quebecers is a myth.

Not a myth?.... I recall a few years ago a Filipino elementary student(I'm of Filipino descent myself) was expelled from his school for using a spoon and fork. I get it, not everyone in the world uses a spoon and fork. But how are you going to verbally reprimand a kid to not use it, then after making complaints the school board fucking expels him.... anyway.... Montreal is different and I like the place but gave up French in Grade 9 after getting the required 1 credit.

Toronto is not all about work. Life is all about work. Summer in Toronto is the best, festivals and street parties every week. Club culture and music in general are diverse in every sense. And as of late the weather has been crazy amazing. Come one come all now!!!

 tdot in the summer really is the best. i've worked in toronto every summer for the past 4 years, this being my 5th, and every time it has been a great experience.

If you get a chance, check out the KIA exhibit at luminato this year. I'm putting together their DJ booth and lineup for the 'kia mixer lounge', gunna feature local DJ's spinning on/off from the 13th-17th of June. They also have a CRAZY budget on visuals, I highly reccomend coming after a little J :smash:

I know that. Having people coming from diverse backgrounds (especially from backgrounds where acommodation is not common) is likely going to cause tension. As I stated before, it won't be blatant, but it will STILL be there. You just can't expect (i.e. Christians and Muslims) get along together. Some things, even those done unintentionally, could cause great tensions. (I.e. going over to a muslim's house and giving them a bottle of wine).

As far as 2nd generation canadians, they are not immigrants anymore, they are Canadian. Also, they are generally watered down culturally in comparison to their parents. (I.e. many claim to be from a certain country but don't speak the language).

As far as jokes and stereotypes, meh... those will always be around. They can be funny, just depends how one uses them.

If you want jobs come to Alberta. We make the most money period. We work hard (pretty much all jobs are a manual type labour, not much office shit), and play the hardest :) Hard to find an Albertan that isn't an alcoholic lol
When it comes to racism though, we're by far the worst. We're pretty much the Texas of Canada, redneck and we love it. Lots of guns, off roading, jacked up pickups, beer, hunting, camping....pretty much the observation I've made after living here my whole life is Alberta is what would happen if you gave everyone in a trailer park $100k a year.
Oh and housing is pretty rediculous in the big cities. Houses in Calgary and Edmonton average $400k+ but the house I own right now isn't even ten years old, front attached double garage, 1450sq feet per level, 5 bedroom, huge yard....and my mortgage is $290k. You just have to know where to look.

Yeah I hear work in AB is pretty good and they pay well but the cost of living up there has gotten worse... ie. your reference to $400k+ houses.

Toronto is a little forgiving when it comes to housing. I say the average price for housing around Toronto(not the core) like Scarborough & Etobicoke ranges around 300K. Which is pretty good for living within the GTA. But for those prices and an hour long drive you can get a brand new house. But traffic in Toronto can be horrendous. Yay for subways!!! lol

Vancouver is cool and all but expensive as hell. Also, you best to bring your Dj gear in from the US because you will be looking at paying a lot more for pretty much anything in Canada.

No provincial Sales tax in Albert Bruh. Prices aren't that much mroe expensive in Toronto compared to the states, you only really notice it with the pricier items. Although if something is really a lot cheaper in the US most people just drive over to Buffalo and buy it, stay for a weekend with the family and shop around for other stuff, then come back within the alotted amount of spending.

I've done some searching on products. At some places (like axemusic.com) their prices are on par with American pricing (when you add shipping and duty taxes on top).
