I am looking to buy a PA system and am pretty clueless as to where to start/what brands to look for, etc.
Since I'll mainly be playing house parties to maybe some bigger frat parties, I want a more portable system that can still bump. So something for small-med/large crowds.
I would prefer to go with powered speakers and I want to keep my budget between $500-800.

If you guys could point me in the right direction, that would be great! Thanks for the help.

$500-800 each? Or for both?

You're not going to get anything that 'bumps' for $250-400 each. You're probably looking at Mackie TH-15's for that budget.

I've heard rumors that some have scored RCF 312's for around that price.

If you double your budget, you can get some 'bumpin' going on.

$500-800 for both. Okay, not necessarily bumping but something that can rock a 100 person party

A pair of these on stands should do what you want :

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-SAMSON-Auro-D415-Active-2-Way-PA-Speaker-FREE-UPS?item=390408793919&cmd=ViewItem&_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D3%26po%3D LVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D8261201356923307666

They are nice sounding out of the box and will handle 100 people quite well. About as good sounding and loud as you're going to get for 600$ and free shipping.

If you are serious about doing lots of events and would like to go larger eventually consider getting one decent speaker and then add a second in the future. qsc k12, jbl prx612, qsc kw122, art 312a all come to mind and are decent speakers. I use k12's and would consider another pair based on their versatility.

thanks for all the input guys. I've been leaning towards the RCF ART 312A's. Like rsn62 said, might invest with one at a time.

There's no shame in that, especially for house/frat parties.

I'd also look into some online stores, like zzounds, that offer the "play & pay" type programs. You can stretch the payments out anywhere from 4 to 12 months I think. As long as you keep paying on time, there usually isn't any interest.

I wish zzsounds had the RCF speakers on there! I think more places should have payment plans, I wish I knew about something like this sooner, lol.

I co sign...guitar center and sam ash offer the same type of deal. Or you can find a online store that accepts bill me later..like B&H Photo etc.

I just picked up a pair of QSC HPR-122i's for $800... Look for something like that used. But be sure to test them first.
