Small Party suggestions?

I'm looking for some cheap amps that I can use at some local private party type gigs. Almost every time I'll get a gig, there will be <100 people, and it will most likely be in a basement. Any suggestions on some cheap amps like this? My budget is ~$250 if that helps, but it's flexible.

With what loudspeakers do you plan to use the power amplifiers you'd like to buy? That'll determine what kind of power amplifier you need.

I just reread what I posted... I worded that terribly. I'm looking for speakers. Passive is fine, but I'd prefer powered of course. I'm not looking for an amplifier right now. Sorry for how badly that was worded.

Those are probably as cheap as you can afford to go.

Unfortunately the GSR10's at $250/ pair are no longer available but the GSR12 is still available on PSSL for $150 each plus shipping. This would be a good budget system to start out with for small gigs. If you want them you best order them today becuase once they are gone thats it.

keep in mind, for your 250 budget, you need xlr or trs cabling. that is kind of expensive, also, speaker stands? those will work, of course but the low end will suffer tremendously.

used high end equip is better than new crap. look in ebay or craigslist, i found my 1400 w mackie for $150. fr series was very well built and is heavy. but that generally means it takes lower ohm loads to higher volumes than a light amp would

That's great to know.

Now to the OP, I would go for the M-Audio speakers... I have not heard them in person but read decent reviews.. Maybe down the line a sub would be beneficial to your "system" :)

Also remember you need stands and cables!

I'm a big fan of the EV ZxA1 for this application, but it's over your price range.

I doubt you will be able to find a decent pair of loudspeakers for $250.

Stick with the M-Audio's, they have a 12" driver for better bass response and a built in high pass filter you can use when / if you add a sub later on. The American audio has a better mixer section but the M-Audio has 100w more power at hand and was originally $300-400/ speaker where the American audio has always been priced very cheap. Never owned American audio speakers but would put the M-Audio above them in terms of quality components. I own a pair myself and they sound pretty nice for the price.

I tried to find the M-Audio's on pssl.com, but they weren't there. I tried a few other sites, and I found the M-Audio speakers for $289 each. Do you know anywhere that they are cheaper?

I just noticed PSSL was sold out of them today. I wouldn't buy Gemini speakers.

I was nervous about the Gemini part because I've only heard people complain about Gemini speakers. I think I'll end up getting the American Audio or checking out ebay soon. Thanks!

My only other suggestion would be a sinlge Peavey PV115D for $300. For basement parties this could be enough sound. I would rather one budget 15 over a pair of budget 10's for the lower bass extension. Peavy makes great entry level gear.

A single Samson Auro D415A is also a good choice. Get a second one when you get the $$$. Great sounding speaker out of the box and will handle small parties just fine if you can get it up on something (like a speaker stand). It actually comes with a free speaker stand for 329$ here :
