I dont have a really big mobile setup really... I have a good JBL PA system with a few lights. I wanted to get something new to add to my setup and i was thinking of the Motion Drape. I have always wanted a similar visual effect but the price can be expensive.
Does anyone have this piece of hardware that can comment on how well it works?

If I'm not mistaken the Motion Drape hasn't been out for that long, so not a whole lot of people have experience with one or even own one. I was at wedding a few months back and the DJ had a Motion Drape. The DJ was pretty busy throughout the night for obvious reasons but I was able to sneak in a few questions about it and he claimed he really like it and that he was always getting compliments from his clients and their guests. He did tell me that he was running his through DMX because he wasn't a fan of the controller it came with. Overall I was pretty impressed with it and it looked pretty bright at least in the room the DJ was setup in. The only downside for me would be not being able to program my own designs using DMX. I'm pretty pretty sure DMX is just used to control the built in scenes that the motion drape has.
Hope that helps.

I believe you can program your own patterns as well. Have seen people play tetris on it and other things, haha.
I was wondering how durable it was.
Thank you for the review Trix! Rep

Chauvet Showxpress is a DMX software lighting controller that controls light fixtures. The last update to Showxpress added a feature called "Pixels" which allows you to control LEDs. Heres a link that should help explain things a little better

Durability wise, in my opinion it is road worthy

Something to watch on the MotionDrape - there is a DMX control issue (similar to the ColorStrip issue a while ago). Using it with certain interfaces (like the EntTec ones) require you to modify the refresh rate or the drape will lag in the time the value is sent and the drape responds - or even not respond at all. I thought mine was defective until I did some troubleshooting for my ColorStrips a while back. It will also cause flashes on some of the LED's when the movement is near.
It also is a bit laggy when using the Blizzard Wicicle wireless DMX units. It works, but there is a sub second delay that is noticeable. I had to move the cues early to deal with this.
I reported this to Chauvet, but so far, there has been no response.

not to defend chauvet or anything but enttec is an economy solution to computer dmx control, and blizzard wicicle isnt top of the line. What Im trying to say is you cant expect non top of the line products to work flawlessly all the time because you do get what you pay for. A good example from experience from this a buddy of mine used martin hackjockey box and it causes delays in dmx signal and relay

Interesting, it would be cool to have like a few of these things for a huge stage.

I have one that my VJ uses in our shows (we have a Motion Facade, not the backdrop) and to say the least it is amazing. Everyone really enjoys it and it has so many diffrent patterns it never gets old.

@LittleWiggler: The COLORstrip flickering was an issue with the DMX timing in the master chip on the main control board. What DMX issues are you experiencing with the MotionDrape LED and who have you been speaking with in our Customer Service department about it? Also, there will be a small lag when using any wireless DMX system as it takes time to transmit and receive the signals. Your laptop computer running on a 2.4GHz (or even 5GHz) is the same way as well as your cell phone and home phones. :)
Please feel free to give our customer service department a call to work out any issues that you may be experiencing with CHAUVET products.
Thanks for your continued support!

the drape has 176 smd tri color leds but only 8 ch of dmx control. therefore, you CANNNOT use showxpress/sweetlight to create unique dynamic patters in pixels.app. If the drape were able to reproduce media, it would have to have at least 3 ch of control for each led = 176 x 3 = 528 channels of dmx!
unfortunately, you can only playback the preset patterns and RGB mix ALL leds simultaneously.
For media playback, i would recommend the chauvet VID100 - it is a 10' x 10' 100mm pixel pitch LED curtain with 1024 resolution.

ultimately, if you want to reproduce lo res and standard def media, you will need to go with something of a much smaller pixel pitch (MVP 37.5 by chauvet is a good place to start). as you can see this is much more expensive, but one must realize we are talking about two completely different levels of product here.
hope this helps -
