THIS IS AN UPDATE IN PROGRESS..KEEP CHECKING BACK FOR NEW INFO

[Q] How do I make more money with my website?

[A] Their isn't one thing that anyone person can do to just make money magically appear from their website, but a series of different things. Below is a helpful guide on making a great website and many tips to improve overall vists (a good fast website & good SEO= more visits....more visits = more potential clients (and brand recognition)...more clients = more money $$$$:D)

Ok since I helped with Sweens mobile website post, I have gotten lots of great feedback, some one asked me to repost it into a new thread... Here it is in cased you missed it.

Quick CheatSheet to build your own PROFESSIONAL website

1. The name says it all

Get a good URL..the url by rule of thumb should be no more than 3 syllables and should be quick and easy.. (ill go more in depth why later)

2. Get Reliable/fast hosting

Get reliable hosting....and get a FAST host.(speed is VERY IMPORTANT for SEO) GatorHost IMO is the best...(Ive used 100's of diffrent hosts for my clients.. (*oh btw Godaddy sucks..stay away) I HIGHLY recommend using this link (http://secure.hostgator.com/~affiliat/cgi-bin/affiliates/clickthru.cgi?id=knuhkles) and use this coupon code that I made just for djforum users mobiledjs12 and itll give you 25% off..

3. Go longterm in hosting

Get the cheapest plan (if your just gong to have one website... If not go to the second tier plan)... the longer you host the cheaper the price and in my opinion the better... Dont use services like Webs, and anyone else that does that instant website junk..... they all suck and there all a rip off .. They have very little SEO clout . My advice is hist and design yourself and keep the extra cash:)
FYI: Put some time into your site*remember your website is a direct reflection of your brand, Customers will think crappy website means crappy company or crappy service* "if you put crap in, you'll get crap out"

4. Install the framework to your new website

Install a CMS (content management system... Ex. WordPress, drupal, joomla...ect.)through the dashboard (imo Wordpress has the best user interface, great if your new at this ..).. Drupal, joomla, and the million other cms's can be a little much for people who dont know code (css, php, mysql, jquery)

5. Get a premade theme (or make your own)

Just google free wordpress themes.. theres thousands of free themes or if you want to get a really professional page get a "Premium Wordpress theme" from themeforest.com, woothemes.com, ect... (again google premium themes) ... thememonster has beautiful themes but are a bit pricey.

6. Follow the instructions which came with the theme and install it

7. Get familiar withyour CMS

Just Google "learn word press" and watch you tube videos on whatever your trying to do (they have step by step videos on practically every subject)... even go to wordpress.com and look at the help content they got great tutorials on most if the topics

8. Search engine optimization

This is how you get noticed. Get the site finalized and start promoting (SEO.. Search engine optimization).. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO GET NOTICED...(just google seo and learn about it). You can have one of the best sites... But if people can't find your content YOU DO NOT EXSIST.

9. STAY AWAY FROM FLASH

I always see this on webpages... the future is mobile WITHOUT flash.. get into html5 for sideshows and videos...(its the future).. bc ipads, iphones and alot of mobile devices do not use flash.and flash can't be SEO'd

10. Quality Content, Quality Content, Quality Content

this is one of the most important aspects of seo....you need great quality content. (look at the Competition and ask your self what content can I add that my competitors don't have?!) Fill in the void for whatever the customers are asking. Also... Once youve put the content up, write posts once every 11 days or do to keep the content fresh.

*google penguin update*

11. Get social

Google is now heavily including social into your sites. they want to know if your connecting with your customers. Use Facebook, twitter, google+... To post new content with links referring back to your website. google wants you to be more engaged.

12. Don't try to cheat the system

Google knows if your trying to cheat them, or if you have cored someone elses content. If you aren't caught now.. You will be.. The sorry gains are not worth getting google banned.

Knuhkels, This was a great post and definitely worth being a sticky in the Graphic Design forum (also used for webdesign)

Unfortunately, after some discussion, I had to edit your post. Please consider purchasing a vendor account if you want to promote yourself as a web designer, on the forums.

I'm sure you do great work, and I mean this in the nicest possible way but... Do you check for spelling and grammar errors better than you did in your initial post?

lol... Its hard not to get excited about this nerd talk.. :). To answer your just google godaddy vs. host daddy and view forums... Its riddle with speed tests.... The reason you need a fast host is because 1. the average prospect will wait about 3 secs to wait for a page to load and 2. The faster the page loads the more brownie points google will give you on their search :)

Lol... I did the whole post off an Android smart phone... There's tons of grammar and punctuation errors in my post... I'll admit that.. But i'm not a journalist and the grammar and punctuation doesn't reflect my final product ;)...oh and don't worry...I totally understand your intentions...would you like to clean it up for me???

My personal opinion is that templates are a great start, but I wouldn't suggest them for a permanent site. I say this because just as easily as you used it, your competitor can do the same, or someone in another business, etc. Plus it limits what you can do because you have their template, you can't customize your site.

Personally for me, iWeb is an amazing tool. Yes, it requires a Mac, but it's so incredibly simple to use and customize. They have their own templates, but you can easily create a custom background, run your own links, anchors, page tabs, etc. For the requirements we have as DJ's there's really very little I can think of that you'd want that iWeb couldn't do for you.

However, I do agree you need it to look professional. Too many people are using the "sign up for us and get a free site" or the companies that promise to get you listed on the first page of Google for only $75/month and you get a free email address with that. Really? I get that now with Godaddy too, for $3/month.

I use godaddy, never had an issue, and I used RageSoftware's SEO tutorial for iWeb and am currently listed on the first page of every search engine I've found. What I've also found using Google Analytics is that most people don't spend a great deal of time on our site, it's usually a quick run through and that's it. So overloading your site with a ton of information is just bad and useless. Keep it short and to the point, Brides will like it more.

Just my two cents.

great post... The reason I point to the templates is because 1. 80% of the market is still using a pc 2. The templates are usually written better in the code which is more versatile with different browsers. 3. The mobile browsing as the future of computing mobile compatibility is right now easier on a pre written templated site. Now for godaddy... I'm glad it works well for you. the problem with them is 1. There speeds are terrible BC they load there servers so heavily to save a penny. 2. They nickel and dime you to death on extras 3. There cpanel is terrible and clunky 4. They do shady tatics as autorenewing for any litte thing and charging for whois privacy. 5. They charge you a premium for heavy usage. They may work good for the average small businesses but when you get popular itll bring your sure to a crawl. There prices are cheap for a reason. Wiki pedia just cut the contract with them because of these practices. With the same amount of money you can get so much more... That's why I recommend hostgator...but this is all my.opnion

Lot's of great info in here. I'm glad it was bumped. I created a website a little while ago but after reading this I see that I definitely missed some things. Adding my business to Google and Bing places made made a big difference. I should have done this years ago.

On a scale of 1-10, what would you grade our website: http://www.klockentertainment.com. This was built using wordpress and we are in the process of rewriting the content, up****** it for SEO, and blogging more frequently.

I agree this thread was certainly at the heavily decomposed stage but still very useful info from the OP and their website looks like the team are doing very well these days which is great. Maybe explains why he's been dormant around here for a few years. No bad thing if his DJ business is thriving.

The best advice is the hosting because free hosting is the worst idea especially when you have to put up with advertising or other unwanted stuff on your website. Hosting fees are so cheap these days there is no excuse for using freebies anymore. Some ISPs even provide free hosting for residential customers that you can put your website on with no advertising. AOL used to have Hometown which I used to host my first websites. Using the control panel provided by the registrar of the domain I could set up forwarding for the URL and emails. Support@ goes to one address, sales@ goes to another email address etc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AOL_Hometown

Before paying someone to host your website make sure you arn't already getting some free webspace as part of your home internet package because even a few Mb of space can be enough to host a simple starter website. The content needs to be well written and well formatted so always get it proof read and make sure the text (sales copy) is sharp to the point. A bit of humour also helps but not too much. Try to write in the same way as the Dummies Guide To series and you will be ok.

It's a 10 from me.
