So while I contemplate which moving heads to get, I forgot to factor in stands for them (I'm getting 2 units for now). I would like to keep them separate from my main truss (which will have 4-6 scanners). It is basically two tripod crank stands holding up 13 ft of triangular global truss. Currently, I really can't afford 2 more global truss pieces to make towers for the moving heads. Are there any nice and cheap options out there that you guys use? I don't really want them sitting on a couple of chairs or something (will look pretty unpro). Maybe throw them on the DJ table? On my subs?

I'd keep them off the subs. Maybe make some boxes specifically to set them on. A lot of people just put them on the floor.

Cheaplights.com has some incredibly cheap truss that looks like it would work just fine for a moving head tower. I would cover it in silk, though.

Only catch is that they don't make heavy duty base plates for them, so you'll have to rig something up.

Tip a road case on its side and put the cases on the stage if there is one

YOu can make baseplates that adapt to speaker stands. StevieRay did something like this. I have a few I made in my workshop as well. Simple, easy, cheap, and great to keep transport costs down on events that dont book your full lighting package.

I'd suggest either lighting or speaker tripods with custom mounts to hold the movers. Least expensive approach IMHO.

OK let me throw a curveball in here. What if I decided to add more dimesion to my light show by throwing a couple of my scanners alongside the dance floor rather than having them all along one straight line? I can't just rest these on something because the cables connect at the bottom. I guess more tripods would be the only answer.

DJStevieRay - Are your moving heads just resting on the baseplate or secured somehow?

The feet sit in the platform

Got it! So holes in the baseplate and the feet fit inside. Thanks.

+1 to StevieRay, Did something similar for 12" square truss toppers instead of purchasing the ones made by global

Hats off to you StevieRay. You might wanna consider selling those... or at least making and selling them on Ebay. :)

I wouldn't use speaker stands. I did that for a couple years and the height just isn't there. Its like being in the NBA as a 5'9" Forward--you're going to NEED height only all the time. American DJ LTS2. Buy a couple and do this mod:

BTW--the hole for the plastic speaker stand adapters won't fit, its too small as its meant for a speaker stand diameter. You will want to contact Colorado Sound and Light and purchase JUST their star nut, washer and bolt. Its the ones they use for their speaker light stand adapter. I'm pretty sure they have a drawer full of those around. If not you can get one at a bicycle shop. Its the star nut used for installing a stem cap on a 1.5" head tube. If you know nothing about bicycles, ask the bike mechanic at your local shop about a stem cap star nut for a 1.5

You pop off the LTS2's plastic cap, align the star nut on top of the tube, bow side up, using a large Phillips screwdriver, tap it inside about a 1/2" in, drill a hole on the top plastic cap, use the large washer and 1/4" bolt to secure to the Vizi's bottom single hole bracket.

I did this mod a couple of months ago and its secure, cheap and works like a charm. I suggest using SAND BAGS to secure any tripod for events where people have access around that area. Scrims are nice but looks like sh*t with sand bags, but what I like better is: no lawsuits from your stupid tripods falling and the fixture or speaker hitting someone on the damn head!*

I can post a couple pics if you are interested

* drunks, kids running, someone not paying attention trips, a person at your event emotionally unstable runs into your tripod--scrims lit up or not. Stuff happens. You are just a poor DJ, you do not need someone suing you.
