Started this one last time on DJF. Let's see your synths, FX, outboard gear, etc. If you don't have hardware, you don't know what you're missing  So go spend lots of $ if you haven't already

I have a Novation X-Station, an Elektron Machinedrum and an Access Virus.

The first two are in boxes as I'm about to move house and the latter has been in the repair shop for months, seems the guy is being very ******, so no pictures...

I should get on this. I'm rocking a Novation Remote SL25, Korg NanoKontrol 2, Korg NanoPad 2, Trigger Finger, and APC40 (when it's not loaned out).

Though really I could probably ditch everything else and just roll with the Novation. It's seriously that awesome.

The lack of pictures in this thread is disturbing!

Here's my emx-1, post-tube-replacement. Now rockin with two ecc-803 gold pins:

Mars, you still have the Zero 4?

Yup -- since those community x64 drivers were released, I haven't had a single problem with it.

I am very happy with it, I am slowly learning synthesis using it and it has inspired me to learn to play again. The sound is good, but most importantly is special, his own character. To be honest I think other soft synths like DIVA or Zebra can produce some superior basses and heavy morphing pads, but for pianos, light pads and leads its quite good.

I've been seriously considering an EMX-1 or ESX-1 for a long time now. I'm liking Maschine, but a part of me really wants something I can throw in a backpack that doesn't require a computer for jamming. And they're a lot less expensive than something like an MPC-1k.

Any thoughts?

I do really dig my emx, BUT i found most satisfaction by hooking it up to a bass guitar bass overdrive pedal. I have this routed FROM the master outs, which mean I can use things like the fx bus and tube gain-stage on basslines, but this means I can't use the drum rack (unless I want those equally distorted -- generally I don't). So I hooked up the ohm64 to control loops in ableton.

Of course you don't have to do any outboarding like that, but it'd be damn tough to make synths on the emx-1 that compare to the NI tools otherwise.

In other words ... emx-1 is wicked fun for a mobile, quite versatile little all-in-one package, but don't expect the range of sound you're getting from the maschine.

HTH!

[edit]

Also, you coming from the maschine, I probably wouldn't recommend the esx-1 sampler. It's also a really really fun all-in-one package, and once you learn the Korg interface, it's not too difficult to navigate, but seems far less intuitive than software solutions. It's just 'tedious' compared to software I think.

I should also say -- I have next-to-zero experience with both the 1000 as well as the Maschine, but I've done a bit of research. The big thing about the 1000 imho is the visual waveform editing -- compared to numeric editing on the esx (on this topic -- the esx is on-par with the mpx 500). But that's just user preference -- this might not matter to you.

[edit #2]

Oh also -- if you do go esx-1, I'd recommend avoiding the original model -- definitely consider paying a couple extra bucks for the esx-1SD. The original model uses 'smartmedia' cards, a failed attempt from Toshiba in the portable storage market. They're no longer in production, making them crazy expensive, and they can't hold nearly the capacity of the SD counterparts. (The same is true for the emx-1).

[aaand #3]

I think these guys articulate what I'm trying to say much better:

http://www.futureproducers.com/forums/hardware-software/hardware/sequencers-samplers-hardware/korg-esx1-vs-mpc-1000-a-86470/

MPC's are much more dynamic since they got velocity sensitive pads that you can "play" like an instrument, and a sequencer that can record with accuracy of up to 1/96 of a quarter note.

i have an esx and an mpc2000xl and both are excellent machines. each have capabilities that the other lacks, for example the effects of the esx really enhance your sounds while the polyphony of the mpc is superb.
it really comes down to personal preference

the Electribe sound is totally recognizable, their sound is so original. [...] they have only a few sounds, but you move the knobs just one millimeter, and the sound is affect in a extreme way. Elastic sounds.

Cool. I've actually been really happy with Maschine (especially of late) even with it's obvious shortcomings (no timestretching…not as great control from hardware as an all-hardware solution, etc.). I love how quick it is to build a beat and how easy it is to get sounds out of it and into a real DAW. But I don't really like being tied to the computer. The ESX/EMX (and I would go with the SD version, already figured that out) would be a big indulgence related to not wanting to stare at a computer screen so much…I'm really getting sick of computers. Before today (when I'm bouncing between coding, forums, and Maschine) I haven't really touched my computer since Thursday (some foruming on my iPhone…but that doesn't count most of the time) and it was really relaxing. Unfortunately, I don't have a guitar at my girlfriend's place, so I was basically music-less the whole time.

Anyway…back to the pics of hardware. This text is giving me a headache.

Anyone got any hardware going on these days?

Picked up a maudio code 61, although it's really just a controller and isn't a synth. Oh and nabbed an old school launchpad for some sequencing basics.

https://instagram.com/p/BBwIMYEQjlO/

Couple of months down the road I'm dying to nab either a sub 37 tribute, or maybe a minitaur; actually saving up for a prophet '08 rack would be dope. Or a virus t2i desktop; it's digital, but I think the complexity and flexibility afforded would be amazing complimented with a simpler analogue.

Suffering from some serious gear envy atm. Too much browsing on gearslutz lol

*EDIT* I just realized there was a production set up thread in the "Sticky" threads. My bad.

I dont really have too many pieces of physical hardware or rack mounted gear but ill still post a pic of my set up in the next day or so.
Its pretty basic but gets the job done... I also suffer from gear envy...LOL

Here's a list of what i use on a daily basis to produce music:

27" iMac
Apogee Duet Audio Interface
Yamaha HS80M's w/HS10 Sub woofer
PreSonus Faderport
Akai Mpk25 & some generic 88 key midi keyboard
AKG Perception 220 Mic for vocals
AKG K550 Headphones for referencing
