Just pick tunes you like. If you're gigging on a regular basis, you might want all the top 40 / top chart hits in your Genre in there too.
Play what you like!

a good place to start with would be a record pool, such as djcity.com or mymp3pool.com

Then you can start exploring tracks that you can buy digitally, such as beatport.com

And a great place to look for music that you might like would be like pandora and spotify because it searches similar tracks for you.

And as finalcoyote said, look at the billboards top 100 because most clubs and gigs require top40 tunes.

Definitely check out djcity.com as mentioned by djkvg. I highly recommend perusing YouTube and just clicking on related videos. Most important, listen to mixes by DJs you like and get their track lists.

Eh, not necessarily. Only get Top 40 tunes if that's what you want to play.

If youre getting music for djing purposes you want to become part of a dj pool of some sort. Paying by the song for music that youre going to be djing with would get incredibly expensive.

Just to ensure no confusion, I am not advocating using dj pools to grow your library of personal tunes.

It comes down to what you like to listen to! I personally don't use any sort of DJ subscription service, but I subscribe to a couple of blogs that post genres I'm into and I find music that way. It's a little more work, but it shows a little more originality in my opinion.

Play what you want, don't ask others what you should play.

And Rick Astley.

I'd also recommend having the Top 40 tracks.

And then, well it pretty much depends on which Genre you plan on playing or which genre you like.

Depends on what you're building it for... for you? whatever you like. Club DJ? again what you like but know the scene/crowd. Mobile DJ? Top 40's of today and yesterday is a good start.

To be fair, he did say it would take a little more work...not necessarily hard work

It can be hard work if you don't really have the time to do search blogs extensively. That being said, it makes sense why record pools exist.

Read magazines, blogs and reviews. Listen to internet/late night EDM radio shows. Download podcasts and buy mix CDs by your favourite artists. Go to clubs and shows to hear the latest tunes by the DJs you like.
