View Full Version : How to: Install SL1 inside your mixer

A brief tutorial on installing SL1 (or any other soundcard) inside your mixer. I used a SL1 box inside of a Tascam XS-8, but any mixer with enough space should work.

Edit: Subsequent/Alternate installations

SL1 w/ Ecler NUO 4.0 (http://www.djforums.com/forums/showthread.php?10508-Installing-SL1-into-NUO-4-0)

If Telly ever comes back around on these boards he could definitely help you out with that. He's done it before as well.

Do you think it would be possible to install and Audio 4 into a 4 channel mixer, possibly turning it into an Audio 8? I've been thinking about that for a long while now.

Edit: actually I'm an idiot now that I think about it, not possible, but would be awesome

I like the idea of eliminating the SL1 power supply too (needed for playing vinyl with the laptop off). I wonder if there is space in my 707...

I wonder if the DJM 250 would have enough room to fit an SL1/SL2 (maybe an innofader too)...hmmmmmmm

Yea it's nice to have your mixer's Phono switch do exactly what it's supposed to do. I had a 707 but never popped it open, seems like there might be enough space since there's nothing in the way except your up faders.

Bang up job and really reduces cable clutter. How did you mount it inside the mixer chassis? It looks like it's only resting there without any form of support.

The idea was to make the mod as reversible as possible. Using hot glue and plastic bottle caps instead of expoxy and metal brackets/screws avoids a few problems.

I used hot glue, and glued water bottle caps to the each side of the SL1 board as a spacer in-between the two pcb's. The SL1 board itself is "free floating". It is rested on the main pcb (with the plastic water bottle caps between them). When the box is closed up, it puts slight tension on the bottle caps, and they act as springs - which keeps everything tight when the box is closed up. This also ensures that the two PCB's cannot touch each other.

This just happens to work because the bottle caps are the right height to make everything in my box flush. This may not work for you.

Hey durty - go ahead and post the problems in this thread publicly. This way more people can help you troubleshoot.

Mark_Spit

Good idea with the caps. I was afraid the the boards might come into contact but you got that sorted with a pretty simple solution.
I won't be trying this on my PMC-37 anytime soon as I just finished making a stand for my newly aquired M-Audio Fast Track Pro which I'll posting up soon. I remember TeLLy did it to his 37 a while back - good stuff.

durtyjerzy609

i think i sorted my problem... the sl1 grounds itself thru the chassis (box) and if you remove it for the sake of space like in the ttm56, you have to run ground wires from the pcb points (2 angle brackets 1 on easch side of the pcb) and ground them to your mixer chassis

1. You need to use a multi-meter and test your RCA ports connections...

each RCA is a made up of a neg and a pos. the outter casing of each port is the neg and the pole (inside) is the pos. you can also use google to look for the wiring diagram/pcb layout of your mixer. that will help you greatly. i didnt use a multi meter for my rane ttm56 but ny using the wiring diagrams and the knowledge of the pos/neg relationship of an RCA port/wire, i was all set. BE AWARE cold solder joints and wires too long or excessive tips on your wire will cause excessive ground noise which you will hear thru ur earphones, and will result in poor serato calibration and responce. i also found that you should power on the mixer before you plug in your rca for serato

Right on man! Very interested in seeing your "version" of the install.

Including your install, I count 5 successful installs since the tutorial (not including your subsequent installs). The DJ world needs less *proprietary* equipment. It holds people back and forces them on the expensive bandwagon.

It's a shame Telly isn't around anymore, he was a big Traktor jock and installed the Audio 8 inside a 4 channel NUO mixer. I never got a chance to see it, but it was definitely a larger, riskier, undertaking. And I know there's a decent amount of Traktor fans on these boards.

Got an email today on this very topic ;). I had to sign back up to say hi. And no, not riskier, just a larger case and more channels to fuss with. The way things are set up, if you ripped the A8 and its wires out of the mixer, both pieces should still function fully.

so far all my installs have been on TTM56 or the 56S... so ive gotten down all the solder points and packaging. I have picked up a new trick, which is to use non-conductive fire resistant felt to the SL1 board at possible contact points. This A) keeps shit sounding nice when moving it around, no one likes hearing PCB boards slippin in their mixer B) cuts down the risk of ground/signal points contacting interior parts resulting in ground feedback or worse FIRE. All in all I'm super psyched about it. I just got a TTM57SL, which I can now use for gigs, and I keep the 56 at home, so no more breaking my setup down to go play at the club. I think I'm catching gear feaver again hahaha

Hey what's up guys. Glad I found this post I've got a 909 that I want to put an audio 6 into, but it is tight in there. I'm thinking of putting in underneathe the faders. I tried asking some ass hat for help on YouTube and he wouldn't give help me as he charges to do it.

I've got the mixer taken apart and now I'm confused how to tell what points to solder. I've got a multi meter but I'm a total noob with it, how can I use it to find my RCA points?

if you have mixer apart already you can either read the board to see where the contacts lead or use a multimeter
