View Full Version : Best songs for Subwoofer Demo?

I talked to the local Danley rep on Friday and he's going to set me up with a demo of some of their subs and tops in the next few weeks. I'm planning on buying a TH-118 in May but also want to hear how the TH-Mini might sound for smaller gigs. He doesn't have a CS30 for me to hear even though that's another small one I was hoping to test out.

With that, what do you think are the best songs to use for demoing subwoofers? I have a test tone app that I can use, too.

"The Way You Move" by Outkast comes to mind right away. Any others you typically use?

depends on what you want the sub for? top 40's and dance music, rock music? reggae? hire inventory?

I use the track "Army of Two" by Umek vs. Beltek. Very heavy and aggressive Detroit tech track. At the 1:05 mark, it gets HEAVY and the bass almost "hangs", more like a straight tone instead of being a musical element.

It's a good one for using to find air leaks and other imperfections with subs, it'll show any faults loud and clear!

There's a program you can download called "Tone Generator" where it will play any frequency you want. Other than that, play a bassy tune that you're familiar with so you can make a comparison.

Thanks, guys. I usually play Top 40 for my DJ work but my personal taste runs a little more left of the dial. With having a chance to test out some of the baddest subs on the planet I wanted to get some other suggestions for really putting them through their paces.

There are tons of bass-heavy tracks out there these days. They key is to use what you are familiar with. It isn't all about volume (to me anyway)- the musicality, tone, speed, and "flatness" are what make a great sub a great sub.

QFT. You need to listen to the music you'll be playing. There's no need to get a sub that sounds great with reggea if you'll be playing trance.

I do not agree with this statement. Bass is bass in all its flavors, If a sub is designed properly it will play different types of bass equally well.

There was a CD I used to have, meant to demo big home theatre systems back in the day, called "Bolt Your Speakers to the Floor!". It was from the early 90s, but covered many genres, and when it came to REALLY pushing something, they had a track that was all MASSIVE church organ.

I have never found anything since that has ever sounded quite as "big".

This isn't true. Different types of music go about bass differently, and the transient response of the speakers matters.

Here you go...

For 90's rap flavor with varying bass levels in one song... Tupac's "Violent" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BN8zP3RBDLQ).

For the new-era balls-to-the-wall overmastered effect, look no further than Kanye's "Monster" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLnS-2h_nog&feature=related). Be sure to play a good 2-3 minutes of this song, it's got a fierce bass drop somewhere in there that holds for about 10 sec. straight.

Also try Steve ANgello's "Knas" for the EDM / Electronic music types.

... and lastly Béla Fleck & The Flecktones "Flight of the Cosmic Hippo" for sub-bass musicality testing.

Don't be an inexperienced DJ newb and download a Youtube rip... spend the loot and rip it directly from CD or at least grab an AAC from iTunes at $.99 each.

Hopefully, the test room they're using is conducive to good bass testing. You may encounter room modes or dead spots so be sure to listen from different areas if something doesn't sound right. These songs WILL NOT disappoint you. You're choosing the best subs on the planet.

Nicolas Jaar - Mi Mujer
Major Lazer - Keep It Goin' Louder (mix)
Tiesto - Maximal Crazy
Skrux - If You
Flux Pavillion - Hold Me Close
Bassnectar - Butterfly
Daft Punk - Da Funk

Well it depends. Do you want floppy bass or tight punchy bass? you can't have both. Depending on the music style you need different to suit. Some styles suit the extra lower extension and others don't. Speaker designs are often a trade off of 1 perk over another.
